If your pain tends to flare when life gets overwhelming, you're not imagining it. Stress and chronic pain are deeply connected; when your nervous system is on high alert, it can actually amplify pain signals and make everything feel more intense.

It's a cycle a lot of our patients know too well: stress makes the pain worse, and pain makes stress harder to manage.

Some things that can genuinely help break the cycle:

💙 Gentle movement (even just a short walk)
💙 Deep breathing or guided relaxation
💙 Talking to someone you trust, or your care team
💙 Being honest at your appointments about what's going on in your life, not just your body

You don't have to manage your stress perfectly. But if it's adding to your pain burden, that's something we want to know about and help you address. You deserve care that looks at the whole picture.

We're here for all of it. 💙

That shooting pain down your leg? It might be your sciatic nerve. 🦵

Sciatica is one of the most common sources of chronic lower back and leg pain, and one of the most misunderstood.

Here's what to know:

What it feels like:
◇ Sharp, burning, or shooting pain from the lower back through the buttock and down one leg
◇ Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg or foot
◇ Pain that worsens with sitting, bending forward, or even sneezing

What's actually happening:
The sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in your body, is being compressed or irritated, usually by a herniated disc, bone spur, or tight muscle.

What helps:
◇ Targeted movement and stretching (not bed rest)
◇ Heat or ice on the lower back
◇ Working with a pain management specialist to identify and treat the root cause

If you've been dealing with this kind of pain for more than a few weeks, it's worth getting evaluated.

"I have been a patient at SiPC for two years. Each month, I have been continually impressed by their professionalism & strong communication. Their online patient portal is easy to use & so much better than leaving voicemails or making calls trying to reach a real person.

They have developed a strong internal model of care that is often lacking in other healthcare entities. The team focuses on the patient & how, through different modalities, they can assist the patient in working to improve their quality of life in a safe & effective manner. I'm very blessed to have found this team of people, and I can't recommend them enough." – C.B.

Poor sleep makes pain worse. More pain makes sleep harder. 😴

This cycle is one of the most exhausting parts of living with chronic pain, and one of the most common. Here's what's actually happening: when your body doesn't get restorative sleep, your pain threshold lowers. You feel more of what's already there.

A few things worth trying:

🔹 Keep a consistent sleep and wake time — yes, even on weekends
🔹 Wind down for 30 minutes before bed: dim lights, no screens
🔹 If hip or low back pain wakes you up, try a pillow between your knees
🔹 Cool the room to 65–68°F — it supports deeper, more restorative sleep
🔹 If pain is waking you up every night, that's worth a conversation with your provider

You're not just tired. Your body is trying to heal, and sleep is part of the treatment.

Have questions about how pain management can help you sleep and feel better?

"I have been dealing with chronic pain for a couple of years and have been to a few different doctors to get help. I have been a nurse for 20 years and know how patients should be treated — and I didn't find that until I walked into this office.

I was treated with respect from the sweet receptionists to the back office staff. In my experience, compassionate doctors are few and far between, and I was blessed to find one." – D.M.

March weather in Louisville is a lot of things, but predictable isn't one of them. ☁️🌤️

If your pain tends to spike when the weather swings, you're not imagining it. Changes in barometric pressure can affect the tissues around joints and may trigger inflammation, muscle tension, or increased pain sensitivity.

Here's what can help on the rough days:

🔹 Stay warm — layers help, especially over joints that tend to flare
🔹 Keep moving gently — stiffness always gets worse with inactivity
🔹 Stay hydrated — dehydration can amplify pain signals
🔹 Track the pattern — if you notice flares before weather shifts, plan for extra rest on those days

Your pain is real, even when the cause is invisible.

If weather-related flares are disrupting your daily life, it may be time to talk to a pain management specialist.

Spring is just around the corner, and your body is ready to move again. 🌿

After a winter spent indoors, it's tempting to jump back into walking, gardening, or other outdoor activities at full speed. But your muscles and joints need a little time to catch up.

Here's how to ease back in without paying for it later:

🌱 Start at 50–60% of what you think you can do, and build from there
🌱 Warm up first: 5–10 minutes of light walking or gentle movement before any activity
🌱 Use the 2-hour rule: if pain increases more than 2 hours after activity, you overdid it
🌱 Mix in rest days, especially in the first few weeks back

Spring brings a lot of motivation. Just let your body catch up with it. 💪

If spring activity is bringing on new aches or flaring up old ones, we can help figure out what's going on.

These two can feel similar, but they often behave differently, and that can help point you in the right direction.

Signs it may be more “nerve-like” (pinched/irritated nerve):

🔹Pain that travels (down an arm or leg) rather than staying in one spot
🔹Tingling, numbness, burning, “electric” sensations
🔹Symptoms that change with neck/back position (certain angles can flare or relieve it)
🔹Weakness, heaviness, or a “my leg/arm doesn’t feel right” feeling

Signs it may be more “muscle-like” (strain/tightness):

🔹Pain that feels localized — one sore area you can point to
🔹Aching, tightness, stiffness, especially after activity or new movement
🔹Tenderness to touch, and pain that’s worse when you contract or stretch that muscle
🔹Improves with light movement, heat, and time (in many cases)

If you’re unsure of which you’re experiencing or if your symptoms are getting worse, the quickest path to recovery is a medical exam.
