Duany earned her undergraduate degree at Bradley University where she played Division One basketball on a scholarship. During her sophomore year, she sustained a sports injury that required treatment and began her interest in sports medicine. Dr. Duany received her medical degree at Indiana University and completed her Orthopedic Surgery residency at Howard University in Washington D.C. Dr. Duany

also completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Cincinnati. She is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and will be providing team coverage for the University of Louisville. While her primary focus is on sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery and shoulder replacement surgery, she also sees patients with general orthopedic issues including fractures, and arthritis. On July 4th, 1776, the American colonies declared independence from Great Britain, yet slavery continued for another 87 years. President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, granted freedom to enslaved Black Americans, but it took another 2.5 years until June 19th, 1865, for over 250,000 enslaved Black Americans in Texas to be freed by American troops marching into Galveston. Some enslavers deliberately withheld this news from their enslaved laborers until after the harvest season ended. That’s crazy to think about. Even in 2024, we continue to advocate for equal rights in the United States. Let’s celebrate proudly for our ancestors. Happy Juneteenth!

Hello my people! What am I doing there? I am performing a knee arthroscopy (scope). It’s one of the most common procedures in my world and one of the most common orthopedic procedures in the U.S. Its minimally invasive. I make 2 small incisions for a simple knee scope, insert a small camera, called an arthroscope, into your knee joint. The camera displays pictures on a video monitor, and I use these images to guide small surgical instruments. It helps me diagnose and treat problems in your knee, hopefully with less pain and a quicker recovery. As a former athlete & an active person, I can get down with that. ND

Hello my people! My name is Nya Duany. I am an orthopedic surgeon and I specialize in sports medicine and shoulder arthroplasty. I became an orthopedic patient when I was in college playing division I basketball. I injured my shoulder which required surgery and that sparked my interest in sports medicine. I am so thankful to my surgeon who helped me get back into the game. I was so inspired, I decided that was what I was going to do. My family immigrated from South Sudan when I was a child due to political turmoil. We had to start over but my parents instilled the importance of education, working hard, never giving up, and taking care of each other. These lessons I use through out my life and when I practice medicine. It’s finally time for me to get on this social thing and meet you all. Let’s get better together.
