On July 4th, 1776, the American colonies declared independence from Great Britain, yet slavery continued for another 87 years. President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, granted freedom to enslaved Black Americans, but it took another 2.5 years until June 19th, 1865, for over 250,000 enslaved Black Americans in Texas to be freed by American troops marching into Galveston. Some enslavers deliberately withheld this news from their enslaved laborers until after the harvest season ended. That’s crazy to think about. Even in 2024, we continue to advocate for equal rights in the United States. Let’s celebrate proudly for our ancestors. Happy Juneteenth!
