Groundhog Day and Physical Therapy: breaking the cycle for progress!

Every year on Feb. 2nd, we watch as a groundhog predicts the weather - either an early spring or 6 more weeks of winter. But for many people recovering from injury, PT can sometimes feel like their own personal “Groundhog Day”: the same exercises and the same slow progress.

The key to breaking the cycle?

1. Consistency Builds Strength: successful rehab relies on repetition, healing takes time, and those slow daily movements rebuild strength, mobility, and endurance.

2. Mindset Matters: some days feel like spring is coming, while others feel like 6 more weeks of struggle.

This Groundhog Day, let’s break the cycle -whether in rehab or fitness- by committing to small intentional progress. Because unlike the groundhog, we don’t have to wait until spring to move!

When dealing with back pain, getting out of bed carefully is essential to avoid straining your back further. Here's a step-by-step guide to do it safely with a video featuring Si, our student DPT.

1. Roll to your side: Avoid twisting your spine
2. Use your arms for support
3. Move slowly: Move in a slow, controlled manner to avoid jarring your back.
4. Engage your core: As you sit up, engage your abdominal muscles to support your lower back.
5. Stand up using your legs

If back pain is persistent, it's a good idea to discuss your condition with a healthcare professional or physical therapist. They can also recommend stretches or exercises to help improve your back's strength and flexibility.
