Ours is not just any funeral home. The Owen and Wagner families continue the tradition established in 1959.
With our years of experience, as well as our highly professional, friendly and compassionate staff, Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home is the first choice for hundreds of area families each year. With our company forefathers in mind, we continue to provide service that exceeds the expectations of those we serve, create dignified tributes to lives that have been lived, and pass on to future generations hope and promise for tomorrow. Highlands Funeral Home is family-owned and operated by local families whose members represent five generations in funeral service. Perhaps we have served you or your family in the past. You may also meet us for the first time when the death of a loved one occurs. When you meet the director of your choice, you can be assured you will receive professional and supportive guidance. The personal wishes of your family are our first consideration. The owners, along with the staff of funeral directors & embalmers, Kyle O'Bryan, Chris Fender and Ben Washam, will work to create a meaningful experience for your family.

"First responders dedicate their lives to save lives. They are the people who run toward a crisis while the rest of the world flees. According to the Department of Homeland Security, 4.6 million career and volunteer first responders support the communities where they live. They are firefighters, police, emergency medical technicians (EMT), paramedics, and 911 operators. In an emergency, they're the first on the scene. These dedicated professionals answer the call when a crisis arises, often putting their own lives on the line."

from the residents at The Atrium, a senior living community in Louisville, who received them.
At times, our families aren’t able to take all of the floral arrangements home after a funeral. This may be due to travel, or having more arrangements than they can distribute to family members.
While they are torn about leaving them behind, they are comforted and touched to learn that Highlands has a special connection that will keep those flowers and the spirit of their loved ones in bloom.
Johanna Parr, Children’s Catechist at Saint Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church, recently contacted us and asked if we would donate flowers that were left behind to the church’s Sunday School program.
Children gather in a room specially prepared for them, called an Atrium, which contains simple, yet beautiful materials that they use to connect with their faith.
Those arrangements created by tiny hands also made for big smiles.
We share photos with the family who initially received those flowers.
The days after the visitation and funeral can be bare, yet heavy.
Families have told us the children giving a new and caring purpose to their loved one’s flowers helps them move through their grief.

The Owens
One of our founders, Bird S. Owen, Jr.opened the doors of his first funeral home on August 27, 1939. His goal was to provide a necessary service to people at their greatest time of need, and to do so as a neighbor and friend. Since that day, more than eight decades ago, we have honored his high standards and caring ideals in our daily endeavors. Even though Bird has passed away, the Owens are still present in the funeral home-Bird's wife Edith, and their 2 children, Linda and David.
The Wagners
Brothers Henry, Joseph and Ben Bosse were cabinet makers by trade, and as was the custom of the day, they made coffins by hand. They were also engaged in the retail furniture business at 522 Green Street (now Liberty Street). In 1908, Henry Bosse Jr. took over the day to day operation of the funeral home. His son Robert Bosse (one of our founders) followed him in 1943. The Bosse family still maintains a presence in the day to day operation of the funeral home through Robert's nephew William Wagner, and his sons, James and Robert.
