Ours is not just any funeral home. The Owen and Wagner families continue the tradition established in 1959.
With our years of experience, as well as our highly professional, friendly and compassionate staff, Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home is the first choice for hundreds of area families each year. With our company forefathers in mind, we continue to provide service that exceeds the expectations of those we serve, create dignified tributes to lives that have been lived, and pass on to future generations hope and promise for tomorrow. Highlands Funeral Home is family-owned and operated by local families whose members represent five generations in funeral service. Perhaps we have served you or your family in the past. You may also meet us for the first time when the death of a loved one occurs. When you meet the director of your choice, you can be assured you will receive professional and supportive guidance. The personal wishes of your family are our first consideration. The owners, along with the staff of funeral directors & embalmers, Kyle O'Bryan, Chris Fender and Ben Washam, will work to create a meaningful experience for your family.

The Battle of Iwo Jima began at 9:00 a.m. on February 19, 1945, when the first wave of U.S. Marines deployed onto the island’s "Black Sands." Nearly 70,000 Marines and Navy personnel landed on the volcanic shores with the objective of capturing three vital airfields. However, the impossible terrain of soft, shifting ash offered no cover, leaving the troops dangerously exposed to an entrenched and aggressive Japanese defense. What was originally projected as a 10-day operation spiraled into 36 days of relentless, deadly combat, cementing Iwo Jima as one of the most significant and bloodiest chapters in U.S. Marine Corps history.

The Owens
One of our founders, Bird S. Owen, Jr.opened the doors of his first funeral home on August 27, 1939. His goal was to provide a necessary service to people at their greatest time of need, and to do so as a neighbor and friend. Since that day, more than eight decades ago, we have honored his high standards and caring ideals in our daily endeavors. Even though Bird has passed away, the Owens are still present in the funeral home-Bird's wife Edith, and their 2 children, Linda and David.
The Wagners
Brothers Henry, Joseph and Ben Bosse were cabinet makers by trade, and as was the custom of the day, they made coffins by hand. They were also engaged in the retail furniture business at 522 Green Street (now Liberty Street). In 1908, Henry Bosse Jr. took over the day to day operation of the funeral home. His son Robert Bosse (one of our founders) followed him in 1943. The Bosse family still maintains a presence in the day to day operation of the funeral home through Robert's nephew William Wagner, and his sons, James and Robert.
