SaltSmart

SaltSmart™ is an innovative technology breakthrough developed by the NST Center for the detection of surface contaminants, specifically tuned to soluble surface salt detection. So unique, that the SaltSmart™ device has several international patents involving its packaging, materials and chemistry. SaltSmart™ has incorporated lots of great ideas from industrial contractors and inspectors in a variety of field environments where salt contamination is a problem, and we captured them all in a product this small, lightweight and portable!
SaltSmart™ technology is a one-time use disposable device no bigger than a stick of gum.

Why would I use it?
Have you ever seen areas of rust on a ship, bridge, pipeline, railroad car or a water tank? Soluble surface salt contamination is everywhere. A painting or coating may fail prematurely if the surface is not adequately prepped before the coatings are applied. Soluble surface salt is hygroscopic, which means that it will attract water to it through a permeable coating, resulting in an osmotic blister as evidenced by the coating flaking off. SaltSmart™ technology detects the presence of soluble surface salt and gives the user a reading of the concentration of that contamination. If the user determines the salt concentration of a surface is too high prior to coating, the surface can be cleaned before the coating is applied, lengthening the life of the applied coating.

The world isn’t flat, so why would anyone use a surface contamination device that only works on flat areas? SaltSmart™ technology works not only on flat surfaces but curved surfaces, and pipes of varying diameters, and on gratings. In fact SaltSmart™ technology works on surface areas as small as 15mm by 20mm. How do I use it?
Only 5 simple steps to use –
•Take the SaltSmart™ device out of the sealed package, taking care not to touch the sensor
•Place the included ampoule containing pre-measured de-ionized water onto the SaltSmart ™ device
•Use a strip of painters tape or other suitable no-residue tape to hold the sensor onto the surface under test
•Wait approximately 8 minutes, then take the SaltSmart™ device off the surface (don’t worry, you can’t get it wrong, the SaltSmart™ meter will let you know)
•Place the SaltSmart™ device into the SaltSmart™ meter, and read the value on the backlit display

The SaltSmart Meter
The SaltSmart™ supports a paperless quality environment. This means that the meter saves the date, time and value of each reading, up to 250 of them, for easy download to your computer files through a USB connection. The 3 volt (2 AA batteries) meter has a backlit display, a menu-driven software system with a minimum of buttons, supports an easy accuracy verification system, and comes with a belt pouch.
