On July 14, 2025 Kentucky health officials confirmed one case of measles in Jefferson County. This case was identified in an adolescent who recently traveled internationally. Health officials are working to identify people who may have been exposed while contagious. This new case appears to be unrelated to the recent measles outbreak in Woodford and Fayette Counties.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can cause serious health complications, especially in young children. Vaccination is the best protection against measles. Immunization against measles comes through the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. This is the 13th case of measles in Kentucky in 2025. The number of measles cases in the United States is now the highest it has been since 1992. These cases occur in the midst of global outbreaks of measles, including in Mexico and Canada.
