Did you know that Louisville is home to a major piece of national history? The Western Branch Library was the first free public library in the U.S. built specifically for and staffed entirely by African Americans!

Founded in 1905 after a push for equal access by educator Albert E. Meyzeek, this library became a beacon of education and leadership. Its first leader, Rev. Thomas Fountain Blue, was the first African American to head a public library in the country and even established a national model for training Black librarians.

With nearly a 15 year gap in life expectancy based on neighborhood, we work to provide primary prevention of chronic diseases that start in childhood with access to respectful, reliable care, healthy foods, success in school and access to behavioral health services.
