I often get frustrated with articles like this. The headline makes it sound like if you had thyroid cancer, you could consider no treatment. But, this is how people think when it's someone else who has cancer, not them! Consider the data in this article - if you get treated, survival from thyroid cancer is 99.7% (early stage only). If you don't get treated your survival chance is 97%. Sounds ok right? Let me put it another way: your chance of dying from thyroid cancer (early stage) is one in 300 if you get treatment; if you don't your chance of dying is 1 in 33. Would you really take the one in 33 option instead of the one in 300? How about if there were minimally invasive options to treat? It's easy to say others shouldn't be worried but perspectives change when it's you or someone you love!

Patients with papillary thyroid cancer experience favorable outcomes regardless of receiving treatment or not, according to a study published in the Archives of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery (2010;136[5]:440-444).

If you don't want to wear a mask in public, it's your choice. I can't make you wear a mask when you go to the grocery store. If you think it does no good, then you and I will have to agree to disagree. My professional opinion is that it will help protect all of us!

If you come to my office - you will be required to wear a mask. If you don't have one, I will give you one that my wife and daughters have been making.

I cannot, in good conscience, allow anyone to put our medical personnel at increased risks. I'm sure you can understand that we don't want to get any virus at work and take it home to our families. So, thanks for cooperating with our requests for the time that you're in our office. A special thanks to you if you disagree with my medical opinion, and wear the mask anyway!

We now have some data on the death rates for New Yorkers who were admitted to the hospital over the first month of COVID. The table below is from a recent publication in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association). Here are some interesting findings:

1. Men are more likely to die from COVID, no matter the age! So, it's not just higher rates of heart disease or delay in going to the hospital (but neither of those things help). More likely, many of our immunity genes are on the X chromosome, and women have two of those! So, women get immunity from mom and dad.

2. if you are a 20-40 year old man, and you have to go to the hospital for COVID, your chance of not coming home is one in 20. No one is invincible!

3. When you go from 60's to 70+ years old, the mortality doubles for both genders.

4. No children died! There were so few hospitalized children because children don't get nearly as sick as adults.

5. There were nearly as many people under 60 years old who were hospitalized as were older than 60.
