There’s an article going around about continuing education for therapists that’s missing some important context.

Like lots of other professionals including doctors and lawyers, psychologists and other mental health providers are required to get continuing education to maintain their status as licensed professionals. What this looks like depends on what license you have but most professions have some requirements around ethics, su***de prevention, and other key knowledge that you want to make sure stays current after you leave your training program. Importantly, these are not designed to be your only source for professional growth but a minimum standard to maintain your license.

There are in fact lots of opportunities for mental health professionals to get high quality continuing education- many get them from professional organizations. The Kentucky Psychological Association offers education grounded in psychological science which you can find at https://www.kpa.org/.

Finally, if you’re worried about whether your therapist can help you, you should talk about it with them. You can read and print out some questions to get you started here: https://www.kentuckypsychologicalfoundation.org/getting-started-with-treatment
