We are grateful for our grateful patients! ❤️ Read Teresa's heartfelt review of her palliative care team below.

"The Norton Healthcare Palliative Care team helped me in so many ways. The team is so kind and caring, and almost everything I need is in one location. My doctor, Mary Hubert, M.D., is so kind and not only helps control my physical pain with medications but also got me a referral to help manage my lymphedema. I’ve also gotten help emotionally through art therapy and music therapy." - Teresa Smith, Norton Cancer Institute patient

Meet Michele Burgess — a hospice nurse whose own journey with Stage 4 breast cancer is a powerful example of strength, compassion, and hope. 🩷

Diagnosed in 2020, Michele didn’t let fear quiet her calling. She stayed at the bedside — leading a hospice unit, driving through the night to care for others — even while undergoing chemo.

But when her cancer returned, with a mutation that made standard treatments no longer effective, Michele joined a clinical trial. Not just for medicine, but for the chance to reclaim what matters: time with family, being truly heard, and caring for others with all her heart.

Today she’s got good news: her most recent scans are stable. Nothing new. Nothing growing. A moment of relief, a moment of gratitude.

Meet Pam Cook, known to many as the unofficial “mayor” of Norton Hospital. For 20 years, she was the smiling face patients and co-workers could count on.

When Parkinson’s disease forced her into an early retirement, Pam thought her days of connecting with others were over. But with the support of Jason L. Crowell, M.D., and the team at Norton Neuroscience Institute, along with therapy at Norton Healthcare Pavilion, Pam found her strength again.

Now, instead of saying goodbye, Pam is back where she belongs — volunteering with our comfort cart, bringing joy, encouragement and comfort to patients, visitors and staff. 💙

“I was a patient at Norton, roles reversed situation, and they showed me so much love and care, just like I tried to do for the patients who came in when I was working there,” Pam shared.

What could have been the end of her story became a new chapter.
