The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published a recent study highlighting the challenges of reversing synthetic opioid overdoses. The study specifically analyzed patients testing positive for only fentanyl or only nitazenes (a newer group of novel synthetic opioids), without presence of other opioids. The mean total cumulative naloxone dose administered to these patients was between 4.4mg-6.41mg. Authors concluded that nitazene overdoses required multiple doses of naloxone and that nitazenes may have a higher potency than fentanyl.

*USWM, LLC is not affiliated with nor has any financial interest in the JAMA Network.

This cohort study examines naloxone administration among US adults admitted to the emergency department (ED) with a novel potent opioid overdose compared with fentanyl overdose.

US WorldMeds employees are wearing purple ribbons today in support of International Overdose Awareness Day. On this day, we remember without stigma those who have died from an opioid overdose, acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends, and raise awareness of overdoses and prevention. At US WorldMeds, our goal is to empower our communities with tools that positively impact lives affected by the opioid epidemic.

Today, US WorldMeds wants to acknowledge Drew's 27 Chains. Drew’s 27 Chains was founded by Callie Crow in 2020 in honor of her son, Drew, who tragically passed away from an opioid overdose. Callie is a retired paramedic who uses her real-life EMT experience to train first responders, schools, and harm reduction groups on how to identify and reverse an opioid overdose. Thank you, Callie, for your effort in preventing future overdose deaths by educating the community about overdose and prevention.
