We have a Different Philosophy of Strength Training Fitness Integrated Science

In many modern fitness environments, people are encouraged to:
• lift heavier as fast as possible
• generate momentum
• move explosively without foundational control

While there are specialized athletes who train this way, the general population does not need to. For most adults—especially those over 50—strength training should progress differently:
Slow before fast.
Control before load.
Stability before speed.

When you learn to control a weight throughout the entire movement—including the descent—you develop the kind of strength that protects your joints.

That’s the kind of strength that allows people to remain active for decades.

Here at Fitness Integrated Science, we couple Muscle activation Techniques with progressive strength training. Many of our clients need assistance with age-related muscle loss, injury rehabilitation, bone, loss, and performance optimization. These powerful images from Greg Roskopf's Muscle Activation Techniques show one of the great benefits of MAT. When your muscular system is healthy, issues like poor posture, chronic tightness, and chronic pain are a non-issue.

We have two MAT practitioners in our facility, including a wonderful personal training, staff. Call today and book your health assessment so that we can get you on the road to recovery and longevity!

My grandmother, who I called Gaga, was such a light in my life. ❤️

When I was younger, I would go to her house whenever I felt stressed. We would sit in the kitchen and talk while she made dinner, and she would ask me about my day. Those quiet moments with her meant everything to me.

When I started working in the fitness world, she used to look at me with concern and ask, “How long will your body be able to keep doing that?”

For her generation, exercise simply wasn’t part of life. People didn’t grow up learning how important strength and movement were for the future.

Over the years I watched her become more frail. She developed spinal stenosis and moved less and less because of pain. After my grandfather passed away, she became very lonely. Eventually she had to move into a nursing home.

I will never forget the day she moved in. My dad said to her:

“The good news is you won’t have to walk up the stairs anymore…
but the bad news is you won’t have to walk up the stairs anymore.”

Movement had slowly disappeared from her life.

Not long after, she fell while getting ready to go to lunch with my aunt. She broke her hip at 92. She had surgery… and she passed away six weeks later.

That experience has stayed with me for decades.

I often find myself wondering:

What if she had different information earlier in life?
What if someone had taught her how important muscle strength, balance, and movement were for aging well?

Would the ending of her story have been different?

I believe it could have been.

And that is why I have dedicated my life to helping people stay strong, stable, and independent as they age.

Every balance exercise, every hip strengthening movement, every core workout I teach… comes from a deep desire to help people avoid the kind of decline I watched someone I loved experience.

So in many ways, this life’s work began with you.

Thank you, Gaga. ❤️

Balance training isn’t about standing on a wobble board and hoping for the best. It starts with muscle control.

In this progression, we first create stability through the ground. By pressing the feet down and slightly out into the floor isometrically, you activate the outer hip muscles that help stabilize the pelvis and knee.

From there, we gradually increase the challenge:
• Shift more body weight onto one leg
• Maintain hip stability without collapsing toward the chair
• Load the forefoot and ankle
• Finally lift the opposite leg

Each step teaches your body how to control force through the hip, knee, and foot before removing support.

For adults over 50, this type of progressive balance work is essential. Falls rarely happen because someone can’t “balance.” They happen because the body can’t stabilize under load.

Build the strength first, and balance becomes much more reliable.

If you can’t control it, it’s not strength.

Momentum can move weight.
Adrenaline can push through reps.
But neither builds lasting stability.

Real strength means you can slow it down.
Pause.
Hold.
Own the position.

Especially after 50, strength isn’t about how much you lift.

It’s about whether your muscles can manage load without your joints paying the price.

Control builds confidence.
Control builds longevity.
Control is what protects you when life moves fast.

That’s the kind of strength we train.
