Iemanjá is the Afro-Brazilian goddess of the sea, worshipped in religions like Candomblé and Umbanda as a powerful mother figure who protects sailors, fishermen, women, and families. Originally from Yoruba traditions, she was blended in Brazil with Catholic saints like Our Lady of the Conception. Beyond religion, she became a national cultural symbol: on February 2nd in Bahia and on New Year’s Eve, Brazilians dress in white and throw roses and offerings into the ocean, asking her for blessings. In literature, especially Jorge Amado’s Dead Sea, Iemanjá is portrayed as the living spirit of the ocean, guiding the fate of sailors and embodying the intimate connection between Bahian communities and the sea. Today, she represents Brazil’s blend of African heritage, spirituality, and popular tradition—uniting people of all backgrounds with her image of maternal strength and the mysteries of the ocean. Mermaids! Mermaids! Mermaids! Did you know that Brazilian Folklore also has a tradition of mermaids? They are called Iara and typically they inhabit rivers as these are stories that come from indigenous tribes. Technically if my mermaid was truly a Iara they would have darker skin and hair but you know, a little artistic license can happen too (I really wanted to make a true Iara however, I ran out of time.) Come see them and a lot more at WorldFest today. Once the mermaids are gone, they are gone as there is only one of each. Pattern by

Capybaras galore! Not only do we have the cutest , pudgiest, weighted capybaras (pattern by ) but we also have a delightful little girl dressed as a capybara (pattern by ). Fun fact: while in Brazil (in Rio de Janeiro) visiting family I saw real life capybaras while on a walk around Lagoa (the big lake in Rio). They really are freakin adorable. And quite huge. You don’t know how big they are until you see them up close and personal. So come see us at WorldFest and get your own little capybara to take home. WorldFest is this Labor Day weekend at the Belvedere. Don’t miss out on all the fun!

These are characters from my childhood. They are part of a series of books called “Sítio do Pica Pau Amarelo” (Yellow Woodpecker Ranch) by Monteiro Lobato. The stories take place at the ranch, where the wise and kind Dona Benta lives with her granddaughter Little Nose (Narizinho), her cousin Pedrinho, and the cook Tia Nastácia. What makes the ranch special is that ordinary life blends with magical adventures, where characters travel to enchanted lands, meet figures from Brazilian folklore, and even encounter famous people from classic literature. I have chosen to crochet 3 iconic figures from the stories. The 1st one is Emília. She is a rag doll brought to life, who is curious, talkative, and often very funny with her mischievous ideas. The 2nd one is Visconde de Sabugosa (Viscount of the Corn Husk). He is a scholarly corn-cob doll, who is very intelligent and often tries to balance Emília’s wild imagination with reason and knowledge. He was forgotten among the books in the library when he was first created so he spent his time reading. That is the source of all his knowledge. The 3rd is Saci Pererê. He is a one-legged prankster from Brazilian folklore, who appears at the ranch bringing both trouble and laughter, teaching lessons through his clever tricks. Together, these characters go on adventures that explore friendship, imagination, Brazilian culture, and folklore, making Sítio do Picapau Amarelo one of the most treasured works in Brazilian children’s literature.

Come see us at WorldFest at the Belvedere on Labor Day weekend. All 3 characters will be there as well as many other plushies and heirloom dolls.

Another KY State Fair Win! This is probably one of the prettiest clowns I have ever seen. She even has battery operated fairy lights in her skirt that can be turned on and off. Her gorgeous long eyelashes have rhinestones as does the crocheted part of her skirt. Her sneakers are simply to die for. And that jacket? I want one like it for myself! 🤣 Come see her at WorldFest at the Belvedere during Labor Day weekend (8/29-9/1). I’m sure you will fall in love with her! Pattern by .atelie

Say hello to my bunny pair. They are part of the collection of heirloom dolls I create. And let me tell you, they were a delight to crochet. The details are simply amazing: from the surface stitches on the overalls to the full skirt and sunflower in the hat. Not to mention the cute carrot on the hat and messenger bag. They truly are gorgeous! A perfect pair dressed for the summer! Come see them for yourself. We will be at WorldFest on Labor Day (8/29-9/1). The bunnies and so many other adorable plushies & dolls will be there.
