Early transfer of complex wound patients to settings with high-quality wound care can help reduce length of stay, readmissions, and care costs. Kindred Hospitals, which provides specialized acute care for medically complex patients, offers an advanced wound care program built on patient-centeredness, formal wound care training, team-based treatment, and standard protocols. These characteristics make Kindred a high-quality care setting for complex wound patients.

As patients age and develop an increasing number of comorbidities, including diabetes and obesity, they are more prone to developing wounds and to experiencing longer, more complex recoveries.[1] Chronic wound patients also often experience psychological side effects such as loneliness and depressio...

Christa was at home when she began experiencing shortness of breath. Her respiratory needs were not being met by her home oxygen, and she was admitted to the University of Louisville’s Emergency Department.

While there, Christa was intubated, placed on mechanical ventilation (vent), and a trach was placed to help her breathe. Eventually, she was transferred to Kindred Hospital Louisville @ Jewish Hospital for continued vent management and weaning.

Upon admission, Christa was ventilator-dependent as well as being fully dependent for all her care needs. Anxiety slowed her weaning, but once she began to trust in what our team was doing for her, she was liberated from the vent and the rest of her progress quickly followed. She was cleared for a regular diet and started making great strides with our therapy department.

Christa made incredible progress and was deemed ready for her next level of recovery at an inpatient rehabilitation.

Christa credits our interdisciplinary team of nursing, respiratory and therapy for her recovery. She shared, “The team always explained every step of my journey in ways that I could understand, and they were always patient with me.”

Christa is looking forward to getting home for her daughters, seeing her oldest off to prom and celebrating her youngest’s 15th birthday.

Anita transferred to Kindred Hospital Louisville @ Jewish to continue the care she had received from Norton Hospital Downtown after she began experiencing fatigue, weight loss and an altered mental status. At Norton, she was ultimately intubated and treated for respiratory failure.
She was admitted to Kindred Hospital Louisville @ Jewish for continued respiratory support and wound care services. She had a great support system from her husband, and she was always ready to do the necessary things to aid in her recovery.

While she was at Kindred, she was able to be decannulated and made progress with physical and occupational therapies, along with working with the wound care team. To provide the safest discharge, Anita worked with the case managers and ultimately decided she would return to her home with the aid of home health and outpatient services.

Anita has a big, extended family that all live within walking distance, and she is looking forward to getting back to them, cooking a big Easter meal and dying eggs with all of her nieces and nephews.

Anita credits all the things that went right for her while she was at Kindred and all of the great staff that took care of her as the reason she recovered and was able to get home.
