A Journey of Faith and Gratitude: South Carolina Woman Credits Norton Cancer Institute for Life-Saving Care 💙

“I truly feel God put me in Dr. Lye’s hands for a reason, Cheryln said. “He saved my life and I am so grateful to him and the team at Norton Cancer Institute.”

In January 2023, Cheryln, of Greenville, South Carolina, was feeling worn down, short of breath and experiencing a persistent cough. The 78 year old was normally full of life and constantly on the go, but now it took all she had to maintain her daily routine. She was bouncing between her doctors in Greenville, but not getting answers. Her health was failing quickly and her family feared the worst.

Her son, Larry, who lives in Louisville, took immediate action. Larry contacted his friend, Dr. Lye, who just happens to be a specialist in the treatment of lung cancer with Norton Cancer Institute.

“Larry and I are sports fathers – our kids play on the same sports teams in school,” Dr. Lye said. “It was through that connection he reached out to me and we decided his mom needed to be seen at Norton Cancer Institute.”

On Jan. 29, Cheryln and her husband Ollie, began the road trip from South Carolina to Louisville. The week ahead of her was filled with appointments to see Dr. Lye, lab work, biopsy and diagnostics like an MRI and PET scan. By that Friday Dr. Lye had discovered the root of the problem. Cheryln had stage IV lung cancer.

There was a mass in her lung that needed to be reduced in size before further action could be taken. Dr. Lye was waiting on the pathology of her tumor that would help him determine the treatment plan. This test could take another week for results, and Dr. Lye didn’t feel they could wait that long.

“Cheryln’s health was rapidly declining, so we arranged for her to start chemotherapy on the following Tuesday. Our goal was to start treatment and see if we could make an impact on the mass,” Dr. Lye said.

Fortunately, the pathology report came back in record time. The day before chemo was to start, Dr. Lye called Cheryln and her family with the exciting news.

“Inside Cheryln’s mass was a specific mutation that could be treated with an oral medication. The medication attacks genetic mutations within the cancer cells that prove to be more effective with fewer side effects when compared to traditional chemotherapy. Thankfully it worked on Cheryln too," stated Dr. Lye.

Cheryln was well enough to return home to Greenville by the following weekend and 10 weeks after starting the medication, her follow up PET scan showed she was cancer free. Today, Cheryln maintains cancer care with Richard O’Neal, M.D., oncologist in Greenville. Dr. O’Neal and Dr. Lye stay in contact to manage Cheryln’s remission.

The couple continue to make trips back to Louisville. Instead of doctors’ appointments, lab work and x-rays, they head to baseball and field hockey games to watch her grandchildren play or Larry’s home for family celebrations.

Today, we celebrate Diane Tinius for 45 years of exceptional service!

Diane Tinius started her nursing career in 1979 as a medical-surgical nurse making $5.25 an hour. In her 45 years, Diane has seen multiple software changes and upgrades, worked through the COVID-19 pandemic and more. She says she’s happy to have made it through every challenge and growth period while putting great patient care first! Overall, Diane says that watching the technology around her has been the biggest change she has faced. When Diane started in 1979, computers were large, bulky and stationary and a basic computer could cost thousands of dollars. She says that while technology makes some things easier, the adjustment to different machines and programs could be difficult at times. When reflecting on her long tenure, Diane says the best thing about her time at Norton Healthcare has been the people. “We are a family,” said Diane. “Sometimes dysfunctional, but a family nonetheless.”

Recently, our incredible Norton Hospital team came together to make a couple’s dream come true. 💒 During an unplanned admission, a patient’s wife shared her heartfelt wish for a vow renewal—a moment she had been planning for years. With just one hour to prepare, our clinical team alongside chaplain services, jumped into action. From decorations and a cake to sparkling cider and a hand-crafted veil made from tissue paper, no detail was overlooked.

This touching ceremony reminded us all of the power of love, teamwork, and compassion. 🤍 We’re beyond proud of our team for turning this difficult time into a cherished memory for this couple. At Norton Healthcare our care goes beyond medical treatment – it’s about creating meaningful moments, even in the most challenging times.

🎉 Cheers to 35 years! We’re honored to celebrate Rene Shepherd and her incredible commitment to Norton Healthcare.

Rene Shepherd went through the University of Kentucky radiology program in 1986 and graduated in 1988. She began working as a student x-ray tech before graduation. (Something you can’t even do today!) In 1989, she started working in the clinic at Norton King’s Daughters Hospital. She stayed in that position until 2002, when she went to MRI registry. She has worked in medical imaging for the last 2022 years and currently holds the position MRI technologist. During her 35 years, she has seen and been through so much — like the COVID-19 pandemic. Reflecting on the past she says, it was nice to be part of a larger system to get through those tough times.

Join us in congratulating Angie Brown on her 45th service anniversary with Norton Healthcare!

Angie Brown started her Norton Healthcare career as a registered nurse 45 years ago at what was then the Norton Memorial Infirmary. It didn’t take long until she moved into a director position where she oversaw the medical/surgical unit and provided education to other staff members. She officially became a nurse practitioner in 1998 and helped start Norton Community Medical Associates – Geriatrics. As a provider now, she makes routine visits to nursing homes and rehab centers to visit and care for patients. In her 45 years she has seen many changes but one thing remains the same – she still values all the relationships she has built with patients and coworkers. She said the values we have today are the same one’s she learned when she started.

Congratulations to Alferria Whetstone on an incredible 45 years with Norton Healthcare!

Alferria Whetstone joined Norton Hospital in November 1979 where she began work in the dietary department. After about five years in that role Alferria changed positions to be a “carrier” where she says she learned “every inch” of the hospital. She says she was a fast mover who carried her beeper around and delivered different items to all departments and really learned the lay of the land. Eventually her “carrier” job was replaced with our current tube system and Alferria moved to patient care as a nursing assistant. Alferria went to patient care as a nursing assistant and worked the oncology unit. Today she works at Norton Healthcare Pavilion as a patient care associate and unit coordinator.
