May is Sturge-Weber Syndrome Awareness Month.
Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a rare neurocutaneous disorder present at birth, with an estimated prevalence of approximately 1 in 20,000 to 1 in 50,000 individuals. It affects males and females equally and occurs across all racial and ethnic groups.

SWS is not inherited; it results from a sporadic somatic mutation—most commonly in the GNAQ gene and less frequently in the GNA11 gene. These mutations contribute to the vascular abnormalities characteristic of the condition.

Clinical data also indicate that individuals with a port-wine birthmark involving the upper facial region have an estimated 20–50% increased risk of developing more severe neurological complications.

May is Stroke Awareness Month.

Stroke remains a leading cause of long-term disability, but many cases are preventable with the right knowledge and resources.

Understanding risk factors—like hypertension, diabetes, and lifestyle habits—can significantly reduce stroke risk. Early recognition of symptoms and rapid response are critical to improving outcomes.

Explore the data. Share the knowledge. Support prevention.
