The more you know!

✨ Upright Birth & Postpartum Hemorrhage ✨

Did you know your birth position can influence how your uterus works after birth? 🌿

🌸 Upright positions (hands & knees, kneeling, squatting, standing, supported sitting):
• ✅ Use gravity to help the uterus contract effectively
• ✅ Support healthy blood flow & oxygen levels
• ✅ Encourage the natural surge of oxytocin after birth
• ✅ Reduce interventions that can tire out the uterus (like forceps, vacuum, or heavy Pitocin use)

🌑 But here’s the truth:
• Upright birth reduces the risk of postpartum hemorrhage, but it does not eliminate it.
• Hemorrhage can still happen due to things like uterine atony, retained placenta, or birth trauma.
• Respecting the physiologic third stage, skin to skin, warmth, low lights, privacy, delayed cord clamping is just as important as position.

💡Upright birthing positions are one of many ways we can support the body’s natural design, helping the uterus do its job and lowering the chance of complications like hemorrhage.

✨ Birth often works best when we let physiology lead.

Me to Midwife: Why are you swooshing the water like that?
Midwife Sensai: I'm trying to see where that blood is coming from, and if I swoosh it away if it will come back.
Me: 😳 Oh!
Midwife Sensai: There it is!! The cord is torn....get me a clamp!

Education is the foundation to advocacy. ESPECIALLY when it comes to our bodies! I love teaching and empowering young women about how their bodies work. Reproductive health isn't nasty or dirty, and creating this space warmed my heart.
