It's always A LOT of talking. A LOT of posting the stats....but not enough corrective action. While we don't know the exact details of her story....what we DO KNOW is that the numbers don't lie. The firsthand accounts of survivors don't lie.

While the most recent data on national maternal mortality shows 18.3 deaths per 100,000 live births, for Black women, that number rockets to 47.4 deaths per 100,000 live births — a stat that covers deaths up to 42 days post-birth, deaths like Green Smith’s.

While studying Midwifery I lost two classmates unexpectedly. One of them was Jenn. I'm so thankful for this scholarship in her honor. I will carry her legacy and her BADDIE energy wherever I go. Jenn.....this is for you my love 🌻❤️

My vacations look at little different most times. While I'm on holiday vacay I still show up for my Mama's. Sometimes just being in the room with them is enough to make them feel SAFE and cared for. There was a moment when her and I locked eyes and all I said was "are you ok?" Just my presence was the support that she needed. She made all of her decisions with confidence, and utilized all of the information I gave her during our prenatal time together. That is liberation, that is bodily autonomy.
, that is birth justice, THAT is why I do what I do!! 🌻❤️

As a senior midwifery student, I’m preparing to serve families right here in our community, with a special focus on supporting Black and Brown women during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
I am passionate about raising awareness of homebirth and out-of-hospital birth — safe, evidence-based options that center YOU and your power.
