Mama’s Hip Family Co-op stands in solidarity with local organizations fighting for radical change and providing immediate resources to the Louisville community.

Although we aren’t returning to our physical space, our commitment to community support and mutual aid needs no walls. During this time of revolutionary growth backdropped by a pandemic, Mama’s Hip Family Co-op will be collecting resources to provide to two Louisville organizations - La Casita Center and Change Today, Change Tomorrow

We encourage those who are able to provide direct monetary donations to these organization and/or follow them for volunteer opportunities. For those providing collection items to Mama’s Hip, please DM our page for a drop off location to a home in the Highlands.

Can’t provide resources, but have time? We need support in transporting our collected items to drop off points for both organizations around town. See below for current needs and DM Cassie Marshall if you are able to sign up for one of the routes. Follow our page for continued transportation requests moving forward.

We also want to recognize the solidarity the community has received from Save-A-Lot Portland for supporting our collection with a $1000 In-Kind donation! Thank you for supporting the important work being done.

The families that make up Mama’s Hip Family Co-op are committed to uplifting, supporting, and being voices for justice. We strive to see an equitable world where everyone has access to the resources and support they need. And we are encouraged by the current movement in our city and across the world.

Dear friends of Mama's Hip,

It is with gratitude, grief, and great hope that we inform you our co-op will not be returning to our location at 1559 Bardstown Road.

We are grateful for 12 wonderful years in that space - making new friends, taking care of each other, and being and becoming a community of support for families. Thank you to our landlord who has been flexible and accommodating over the years. Thank you to the thousands of visitors who made the space not just special, but sacred.

Mama's Hip has always been the people, not just the place. That has not changed. We are not going anywhere! Our community will keep connecting virtually and in other socially-distanced ways for the foreseeable future.

Our membership has maintained a robust online presence during the global pandemic. We continue to partner with La Casita, facilitate support for vulnerable families, and uplift one another on our journeys. To stay in the loop, follow updates on this public page. If you'd like to join our co-op as a member family, you can join in our conversations, swaps, and other community activities (see link in comments for membership information).

In the future, our co-op may discern we are ready for another physical space. In the meantime, we hope to become, more beautifully and radically, who we've always been: a collective of families striving for a better world by showing up, dropping in, reaching out, and working together.

We look forward to the next chapter in our cooperative journey.

With thanks and love,

The Mama's Hip Family Cooperative

There are so many ways to show up right now. You can support this project from our member LaToya C Polk from home ❤️

‘Our kids are hurting, sad, angry and scared. They are having nightmares. They are randomly crying. Their fuses are short. They are on an emotional rollercoaster. Their parents on the front lines. Fighting. Protesting. Marching. Their parents are home with them. Crying. Watching. Wanting to be out there. I can’t fix it for all the kids as much as I want to. As much as I want to hug them all. But maybe I can make them smile for a few minutes. Maybe even for one day. So we are going to make some care packages for kids in the community. Little self care bags. Gifts to let them know they are appreciated, cherished, cared about and loved. Notes to let them know they matter. That people believe that. Want to help? Here’s how.

1. Use the Amazon wishlist to purchase an item(s) for the gift bags.
2. Donate cash to help purchase things from the Amazon wishlist. PayPal: stubster16@yahoo.com
3. Make homemade cards for the gifts with your kids and mail them to me.
4. Write letters, poems or stories of love and affirmation and mail to me.
5. Donate homemade gifts/crafts for the gift bags.

PM Shannon Stone Porter for mailing address.

I’m also welcome to ideas of other things! Thank you.’

Wow!!! Families *showed up* today to and declare that Black. Lives. Matter.

This was a wonderful moment of action and solidarity. And, as white folks, we know our work is to wake up tomorrow morning and discern which action is our next to take for racial justice. Be sure to check this event wall for links to follow Black Lives Matt and the Movement 4 Black Lives; places to donate funds; and ways to engage your children and others in conversation. It's up to us to break the silence around racism and white supremacy, to examine our privilege, and to join existing movements for justice.

Let's stay attuned to our Black organizer leaders here locally and be ready to show up, step out, amplify, and give our resources. No one is free until all of us are free. No justice, no peace.

Here is a short list in case you need direction on where you can provide financial support, donations of food and supplies, or need ideas on where you can commit your volunteer time.

'1) Remember that we are in a passage, this is an unusual time. The reason it’s important for us to keep remembering that, in the context of being parents, is that we have to adjust our expectations and know that it is going to look different.'

Our Story

Mama’s Hip is a parenting community based in Louisville, KY. We offer a variety of groups(face-to-face and online), classes and activities that foster and nourish relationships among parents, children and community. We believe that community is vital in the transition to parenthood and strive to offer opportunities for parents to connect with each other and seek professional guidance and support.

For over ten years, Mama’s Hip has been a storefront and gathering space that offers products and resources for families of young children. We have cultivated a thriving and diverse community in these many wonderful years, thanks to the vital contributions of many people. We have strived to keep our offerings accessible and inclusive, connecting families with what they need, valuing people over profits.

We want to continue to do this work far into the future. We want to help our community stay sustainable and grow in life-giving ways that benefit all members. We want to do something radically different. And we want YOU to be a part of it!

Mama’s Hip recently transformed into a cooperative business: the Mama's Hip Family Cooperative. We are a place that runs on cooperation, not just capital. We're moving to a business model that better supports our existing, loving community and better meets our aims of sustainability and accessibility.
