Independent clinics provide the majority of abortion care in the U.S. Since Kentucky’s ban, abortions haven’t decreased — Kentuckians are simply forced to travel out of state, sometimes while very sick or medically unstable, just to get basic medical care.

ABORTION BANS THREATEN OUR HEALTH AND FUTURE - Whitney's story from north-central Kentucky, is a mom of three young children. She has a history of high-risk pregnancies, and her doctor couldn’t guarantee she would survive this one. He explained that Kentucky law wouldn’t allow an abortion until she became critically ill.

As her pregnancy progressed, her symptoms worsened—she missed work and struggled to support her kids. She sought care out of state, facing barriers of waiting periods, finances, and arranging childcare.

When asked how she ultimately made her decision, Whitney said, “My other kids. If I were to die, I wouldn’t want to leave my kids alone.”

The human cost of Kentucky's abortion bans.
A Kentuckians recent story: At 24 weeks, due to medical reasons, we faced the difficult decision to end our much-wanted IVF pregnancy—it was our last embryo. Because of Kentucky’s abortion bans, we had to search across the country for the 2nd-trimester care we needed. This is just one example of how cruelly Kentucky politicians interfere in reproductive health decisions. No family should ever have to endure this.

Despite bans and politicians making abortion care harder and less safe to access, the number of abortions has not decreased in Kentucky. Organizations are making sure people know they are not alone -and that they still have options:

A Kentuckian's abortion story: Stacy, a mom of 3 and small business owner from rural KY, learned her pregnancy tested positive for trisomy 21. She chose abortion—but Kentucky’s ban forced her to travel out of state alone. Because of this, she was unable to receive the pain management she preferred. The cost hit hard, pushing her family to sell work equipment. Because of Kentucky’s abortion ban, Stacy endured unnecessary hardships that interfered with her ability to do what was best for her family. No one should have to go through what Stacy did. Share her story so more people understand the impact of Kentucky’s abortion ban.

Gemma, a college student in her 20s, learned she was pregnant despite taking Plan B. Balancing school, work, and fears of passing on family mental health struggles, she chose abortion. Kentucky’s laws forced her to travel our of state, working extra shifts to cover costs. Without access, she says she might have considered su***de. After care, she’s focused on graduating and her future career.
