Heuser Hearing Institute

Heuser Hearing Institute Giving those in our community the experience of sound and language since 1948. We have come a long way from serving three children in a basement in 1948.

In 1948, The Louisville Deaf Oral School began through the joint sponsorship of the Woman’s Club of Louisville and the Kiwanis Club. From our humble beginnings with three children in a basement room at the Woman’s Club, the need for such a place has always been apparent and the school has grown rapidly in both numbers and quality. We were the first school of our kind in Kentucky and continue to be one of a limited number in the United States. Over the years, the need to provide early intervention, preschool and kindergarten services to children who are deaf and hard of hearing has grown. In fact, in 2001, because of the great need, Louisville Deaf Oral School moved to a new 35,000 square foot campus on Kentucky Street. To continue to serve our children with hearing loss after they graduated, Heuser Hearing Institute was established. Heuser Hearing Institute is committed to cutting edge technology, research and instruction. We provide internships and educational opportunities in ear related medicine, speech-language pathology and audiology. Not only are children served at the Institute, but people with hearing loss of all ages. In 2008, Louisville Deaf Oral School changed its name to Heuser Hearing & Language Academy. Now, Heuser Hearing Institute consists of Heuser Hearing & Language Academy, Heuser Hearing Services Center, and Heuser Research Center. Now, we are available to assist everyone who has hearing loss! 🚧If you’re visiting us for dizziness, balance, speech, or cochlear implant testing, you may notice construction as we install a brand-new elevator to improve accessibility for everyone! During this time, our primary labs will remain on the 2nd floor, where our newest and most flexible technology is located 🚧

For patients who cannot use stairs, we will have a first-floor testing option available but space will be limited. If you are able, we kindly encourage you to use the stairs so we can prioritize the first-floor lab for those who cannot.

To support you, we’ve created comfortable rest areas on the stairway landing floors to take breaks as needed!

Thank you for your patience while we improve our space to better serve you. We’re committed to providing exceptional care—today and in the future 💚👂
