Heuser Hearing Institute

Heuser Hearing Institute Giving those in our community the experience of sound and language since 1948. We have come a long way from serving three children in a basement in 1948.

In 1948, The Louisville Deaf Oral School began through the joint sponsorship of the Woman’s Club of Louisville and the Kiwanis Club. From our humble beginnings with three children in a basement room at the Woman’s Club, the need for such a place has always been apparent and the school has grown rapidly in both numbers and quality. We were the first school of our kind in Kentucky and continue to be one of a limited number in the United States. Over the years, the need to provide early intervention, preschool and kindergarten services to children who are deaf and hard of hearing has grown. In fact, in 2001, because of the great need, Louisville Deaf Oral School moved to a new 35,000 square foot campus on Kentucky Street. To continue to serve our children with hearing loss after they graduated, Heuser Hearing Institute was established. Heuser Hearing Institute is committed to cutting edge technology, research and instruction. We provide internships and educational opportunities in ear related medicine, speech-language pathology and audiology. Not only are children served at the Institute, but people with hearing loss of all ages. In 2008, Louisville Deaf Oral School changed its name to Heuser Hearing & Language Academy. Now, Heuser Hearing Institute consists of Heuser Hearing & Language Academy, Heuser Hearing Services Center, and Heuser Research Center. Now, we are available to assist everyone who has hearing loss! Ringing in your ears can feel exhausting, but if you already wear hearing aids, relief might be closer than you think. Wearing your devices regularly can help reduce listening stress and anxiety, and turning up amplified background sound may help cover up the tinnitus so your brain can focus on ambient noise instead.

If you have hearing loss and tinnitus, talk with your hearing specialist about the settings on your devices and how to use them for tinnitus support!

If your hearing aids don’t always feel ‘right’ in different places, newer AI-powered devices may help. Some AI hearing aids use machine-learning algorithms to analyze your sound environment and automatically adjust for a better listening experience.

If you’re a returning patient, bring a list of your “trouble spots” (restaurants, work meetings, family gatherings) to your next visit so your audiologist can match features to your lifestyle!

Michael Oliver, a farmer in Cadiz, KY, learned the severity of his hearing loss while at the Farm Machinery Show.

Heuser Hearing Institute, which partners with Raising Hope at farmer health screening events, fitted Oliver with hearing aids within a short time after his hearing test. He now looks forward to finally hearing his grandson speak, a child who could only whisper due to an illness.
