GLP-1s and Addiction Treatment: A Breakthrough You Can’t Ignore

NAATP Member Innovation Makes National Headlines:
Caron Treatment Centers Featured in The Washington Post

NAATP congratulates member Caron Treatment Centers for being featured on the front page of The Washington Post for their innovative work exploring the potential role of GLP-1 medications in reducing cravings associated with substance use disorders.

This pilot effort, led by Dr. Steven Klein and Dr. Mo Sarhan, reflects the thoughtful, evidence-informed innovation taking place across our membership. While research is still emerging and GLP-1s are not FDA-approved for this use, Caron’s work is helping advance an important national conversation about expanding ethical, science-driven treatment options.

How NAATP is responding
As this area evolves, NAATP is ensuring our members have the authoritative guidance, clarity, and resources they need. Our upcoming educational offerings will help members explore emerging science, understand practical considerations, and connect with leaders shaping the conversation.

We are committed to helping the field navigate this development with integrity, science, and a focus on patient-centered care.
Congratulations to Caron for elevating this important work and representing the leadership of NAATP members nationwide.

📢 Supporting Recovery Housing

NAATP is proud to join our national partners in urging Congress to maintain 30 million dollars in funding for HUD’s Recovery Housing Program (RHP). Access to stable, substance-free housing is vital to long-term recovery, and expanding housing options in communities with unmet needs helps individuals rebuild stability, reconnect with community, and pursue employment, education, and wellness.

As our nation continues to face the far-reaching impacts of substance use disorder, strong recovery supports remain essential. NAATP is dedicated to advancing efforts that strengthen the full continuum of care for individuals and families affected by substance use disorder.

NAATP Featured in ADAW: Calling for Balanced Media Coverage on Addiction Treatment

In response to recent national media stories spotlighting unethical addiction treatment practices, NAATP is urging a more balanced narrative that calls for accountability for bad actors while emphasizing the professionalism, compassion, and science that define legitimate addiction care.

As NAATP CEO Marvin Ventrell told Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly (ADAW):

“It is brutally debilitating for addiction treatment professionals to go to work every day giving their all to treat a horrible disease, only to see that the popular narrative of addiction treatment is that it is corrupt and ineffective. Moreover, the public is influenced by this false narrative and dissuaded from seeking lifesaving care. NAATP applauds the media for alerting the public where corruption may exist, but we implore the national media to dig deeper and see the good work that is done. Rather than indicting a profession, please work with us to get the story balanced. Talk to us! Come see us!”

NAATP continues to advocate for accountability, transparency, and integrity in addiction care — and for fair reporting that reflects both the challenges and the countless successes in the field.
