Animal Eye Center PC Here at the Animal Eye Center we strive to provide the highest quality of medical and surgical animal Why Choose Us?

Both Dr. Steven Roberts & Dr. Kent Burgesser are board certified by the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO). Only Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists® may conduct OFA exams. Additional requirements to be a member in good standing of the ACVO include payment of dues and adherence to the ACVO Code of Ethics. To become a Diplomate of the American Colle

ge of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (DACVO) you must meet the following criteria. After a person graduates from college (4 years) and then veterinary school (4 years), he/she usually completes a 1 year internship in small animal medicine and surgery. The person then serves a 3 year residency in ophthalmology at either a veterinary teaching hospital or at a boarded veterinary ophthalmologist's clinic under the supervision of ophthalmologists. Once the residency is completed the board certification process begins, first with a credentials package. If the credentials are accepted by the ABVO Exam Committee, the applicant is allowed to take the examination. The exam is a four-day process consisting of written, practical, and surgical parts. Finally, after passing all of the above criteria, the veterinarian is recognized as a "Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists®" or in short, board certified in veterinary ophthalmology. No one may use this title unless they have successfully completed all of these steps.

Is this not the cutest little dachshund puppy face ever?!! 😍

We saw this adorable 3 week old puppy yesterday and found out he has what are called Persistent Pupillary Membranes. These are embryonic remnants of the pupillary membrane and blood vessels, a fetal structure that covers the pupil before birth and provides blood supply to the developing lens. The membrane and blood vessels normally disappear over a few weeks, but in some cases we will see small strands or webbing that will always remain in the eye.

Thank you to his owner for letting us share his story and his cuteness!!

We are excited to see how many service dogs we get to be a part of helping with free eye exams again this year!

ACVO®-SAVES: More than 260 boarded veterinary ophthalmologists have already pre-registered to participate in the 2025 ACVO/Epicur Service Animal Volunteer Eye Screening program. This year's locations have been updated on our website, but a few more may be added over the weekend. Be sure to see if there is a city near you providing free screening eye exams and help us screen thousands of Service Animals this year in May!

Happy clients Chloe and Bella are diabetic alert dogs who participated in last year's program. They give thanks to our generous ACVO Diplomates and their amazing staff, and our fantastic Namesake Sponsor, Epicur Pharma.

We are excited to be participating in this great event again this year! Registration opens April 1st and exams will be during the month of May.

Wondering what to expect during the complimentary screening eye exam for your qualified Service or Working Animal? Our veterinary ophthalmologist will examine the eyes to determine if there are any abnormalities. The aim is to identify problems early. Some abnormalities might need to be treated to prevent or delay progression. Other sight-threatening problems such as retinal disease, cataracts or glaucoma can be identified. The exam requires no sedation, requires minimal restraint, is non-painful, non-stressful and usually takes 10-25 minutes.

Registration opens April 1st! buff.ly/fKfM61m

Meet Wallace the 15+yr old Pigeon!! Wallace (who was rescued 15 years ago) came to see Dr. Roberts at our clinic because he has been having some vision problems and has been bumping into things recently. Dr. Roberts diagnosed him with cataracts, and one of them is starting to reabsorb and is breaking itself down. Wallace's owner will continue to monitor him at home to be sure there aren't any complications that would require eye drops as treatment.

Thank you to Wallace's owner for letting us share his story and pictures, and for taking such great care of him all of these years!

Wildlife Wednesday!!
Meet Orlik the 50yr old desert tortoise! Orlik had a foreign body in his eye and wasn't opening it. After numbing the eye Orlik finally opened it enough so that Dr. Roberts was able to get a grass seed out. Orlik will get some antibiotic drops for a week and should be good to go now! Thank you to Colorado Reptile Humane Society for allowing us to share Orlik's story.

We will miss you Dr. Radka Andrysikova! We wish you, Zdenek & Petr the best as you move back to the Czech Republic. However, we fully expect frequent visits ;)

Dr. Radka has been with AEC since 2010 when she became the first intern to kick off our Internship program. We have had the joy of watching her grow and move through the world of ophthalmology.

After Dr. Radka completed her internship with us, she continued working at AEC until she obtained a residency position in Zurich, Switzerland. After completing her residency in 2017 she moved back to the USA and the AEC team while studying for the tests to become a board certified ophthalmologist. During this time she also added little Petr to the AEC family! We all waited with eagerness to hear her results and we were so happy when we finally got the news that she passed her boards!

Meet Fingers the cockatoo!
Dr. Roberts has been working with Fingers after he suffered a corneal laceration 10 days ago. We don't know what injured him but Fingers' owner has been diligently treating him with eye drops and he is recovering quite well. Fingers has been a very good patient, but he does like to show Dr. Roberts how tough he is and will raise his crest, hiss and of course taste test the exam equipment!

Thank you to Fingers' owner for allowing us to share him with you.

Meet Lloyd a 2 month old Bernese Mountain Dog puppy! He had an eyelid defect called a coloboma, which is a congenital defect where the eyelid did not completely develop. This was causing irritation to the cornea and decreased protection of the eye since he could not "close" his eye completely. Dr. Burgesser was able to perform surgery and repair the eyelid so Lloyd is able to blink normally now!
Thank you to Lloyd's family for allowing us to share his story!
