High blood pressure doesn't usually announce itself. No pain, no obvious warning signs. It just quietly does damage over time.
Your eyes, though, can show the evidence early. The tiny blood vessels in the back of the eye are some of the first to show changes from elevated blood pressure. Narrowing, leaking, even small areas of swelling that you wouldn't feel but your eye doctor can see during a routine exam.
It's called hypertensive retinopathy, and in more advanced cases, it can actually affect your vision. The good news is that catching it early gives you and Dr. Dungan a head start on managing it before it becomes a bigger problem.
One more reason that an eye exam is about more than just reading the chart.
