What is Lunar New Year?

Lunar New Year celebrates the start of a new year on the lunar calendar, which follows the moon’s phases rather than the solar cycle. This cherished festival is filled with family reunions, prayers, festive meals, and traditions that invite good fortune.

In 2026, Lunar New Year falls on Tuesday, February 17, marking the Year of the Horse, one of the 12 zodiac animals in the lunar cycle. Each zodiac animal carries its own traits, including the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

The Year of the Horse symbolizes energy, confidence, freedom, and forward movement, making 2026 a year focused on progress, action, and new opportunities.

This week, the Walter Lawson team had the joy of celebrating someone truly extraordinary — Kimberly Waterson, QIDP, who has devoted 34 years of compassionate service, advocacy, and heart to our organization. We honored Kim with cake, smiles, and a whole lot of gratitude, but no celebration could fully capture the impact she has made over more than three decades.
Kim’s work has touched countless lives — residents, families, and staff alike. As a QIDP, she brings steady leadership, deep knowledge, and a fierce commitment to ensuring every individual receives the dignity, respect, and personalized support they deserve. But beyond her expertise, it is Kim’s warmth, kindness, and unwavering belief in the people we serve that make her truly irreplaceable.
Her presence is a steady anchor in our community. Founded by the National Association of Activity Professionals (NAAP), this week celebrates the vital, creative, and person-centered work of activity staff in healthcare, senior living and long-term care, with the 2026 theme "Beyond the Ordinary: Everyday Superheroes".
