Loudoun Therapeutic Riding

Loudoun Therapeutic Riding Founded in 1974, LTR was the original pilot program for therapeutic riding in Virginia. Off the horse, programs also improves self-awareness and self-image.

LTR believes in embracing the healing power of horses to enrich lives and nurture well-being through equine-assisted services. 🐴💚💜 - Loudoun Therapeutic Riding, a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) Intl. Premier Accredited Center, was formed in 1974 to empower and improve the lives of people with cognitive, psychological and physical disabilities through the benefits of equine assisted activities and therapies.

- Equine Assisted Activities (EAA) are widely recognized as being an effective therapy for people with disabilities. Horseback riding develops self-awareness, builds self-confidence, improves concentration and increases self-discipline. Riding also strengthens and relaxes muscles; improves posture and core strength, balance and coordination; and increases joint mobility. Working towards these goals carries over into improved function in all activities of daily living.

- Our PATH Intl. certified instructors are specially trained in teaching methods that use equine assisted activities to assist people with physical, cognitive, behavioral and mental health challenges to learn horsemanship skills and benefit from the equine partnership.

- Programs: Throughout continuing eight-week sessions skills are developed which address each participant's specific challenges.

-For riders with physical disabilities, the horse's motion closely replicates the human gait as they sit astride the horse's back at walk, thus helping to improve the rider's posture, joint mobility, balance, and core muscle strength.

-For participants with cognitive or emotional challenges the relationships formed with the horse, staff and volunteers can lead to increased self-confidence, patience and self-esteem.

-Other goals include improved concentration, attention to task and enhance functional life skills.

- Our horses and ponies are partners in our programming and are carefully screened and trained to assure suitability. Adaptive equipment is used if necessary for a rider to safely participate, and an PATH Intl. certified instructor is present for all activities involving riders. The emphasis of LTR programs, which includes adaptive riding/horsemanship and carriage driving, is to provide a highly motivating experience that promotes these therapeutic benefits and an overall improved quality of life in a safe and supportive environment.

- Hippotherapy, added in 2010, is a treatment intervention that uses the multidimensional movement of a horse; from the Greek word "hippos" which literally means horse. Specially trained, Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapists use this medical treatment for clients who have movement dysfunction.

- Volunteers: Volunteers are the backbone of the program and act as pony handlers, side-walkers, and grooms. Volunteers also assist in many other ways including fund-raising and development efforts. Three volunteer orientation/training sessions are held each year to ensure well-trained and efficient volunteer staff as safety is a primary consideration. Up to three volunteers may be needed for one rider. Parents of riders often contribute time as volunteers.

- LTR relies on the generous support of private donors, and corporate and foundation grants. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation!

We’re so honored to partner with LAWS on this meaningful new program. 💜

LTR believes deeply in the healing power of horses and are grateful to help create a safe, supportive space for children to build confidence, connection, and hope. 🐴

We are excited to share a new healing opportunity for children in our community.

LAWS is offering a Children’s Equine Therapy Group for child survivors of domestic and sexual violence, in partnership with Loudoun Therapeutic Riding. Designed for children ages 6 to 8, this trauma informed group helps kids build confidence, coping skills, emotional awareness, and safe connection through guided horse assisted activities.

This program is made possible through generous funding from the Davis Construction Foundation, whose support helps ensure children impacted by violence have access to healing spaces that meet them where they are.

Because every child deserves safety, support, and the chance to heal.

Back in the 1980s, Robert Duvall shined a light on LTR by recording a commercial for the United Way. He was by far our most famous sidewalker. Today we are grieving with his family and friends and are grateful to him for his kind and generous spirit. He was a truly gifted horseman and truly a gentle man. May he rest in peace.

to when a group from Levi Strauss & Co. Leesburg came out to volunteer as we were settling into the farm 🐴✨

Volunteers are truly the backbone of LTR, and there are so many ways to get involved! Our lesson volunteers support riders during therapeutic riding lessons as "side-walkers" or even "leaders", while our barn buddies help keep the barn running smoothly.

Whether you’re looking to work hands-on with horses and in the barn, support riders in the arena, or volunteer as part of a group, there are so many meaningful ways to get involved and make an impact in the LTR community. We are so grateful for every volunteer who helps bring our mission to life!💚💜

To learn more about volunteering, visit our website and navigate to the Volunteer tab to explore opportunities and find out how to get involved. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at volunteer@ltrf.org if you have any additional questions — we’d love to hear from you!

❄️🐴 Another photo dump! This time the pictures come from our lovely Program Coordinator, Kendall, who was spending some quality time with the ponies—with a little help from her own furry friends of course!🐐🐶🐾

We can’t get enough of the farm in the snow! While winter weather makes barn life a little tougher, our team is making the most of it with smiles on their faces!

If you want to be apart of the fun, we’re always looking for helping hands around the barn! To learn more about volunteering, head to our website and click on the “Volunteer” button. Do not hesitate to reach out to info@ltrf.org with any questions.💜💚
