When your child is overwhelmed, dysregulated, or on the verge of a meltdown—start with the body 💛
Teaching your child belly breathing gives them a real tool to calm their nervous system—not just “calm down.”
Try this together:
1️⃣ Have your child sit or lie comfortably
2️⃣ Place a hand (or small stuffed animal 🧸) on their belly
3️⃣ Inhale slowly through the nose for 4 seconds
→ Filling the belly with air
4️⃣ Hold for 2 seconds
5️⃣ Exhale slowly through the mouth for 6 seconds
→ Releasing the air from the belly
6️⃣ Repeat for 5–10 breaths
Why this works:
When kids are dysregulated, their bodies are in “alarm mode.” Slow, deep breathing signals safety to the brain—helping them settle, think clearly, and regain control.
💡 Tip: Practice this when your child is calm so it’s easier to use during big emotions
Save this for your parenting toolbox 💛
