Being a family of 5 in a 3-bedroom house definitely comes with its challenges… and we’ve hit a big one.
Our youngest, Serena, turned 3 this month and we decided it was time to transition her out of the crib and into a big girl bed. Up until now, she had her own room while the older two—Lucia and Rocco—shared a bedroom. When she was a baby, that setup made the most sense since she was napping a lot and waking up in the middle of the night. But now that she’s older, we figured it was time to let one of the older kids get their own room.
Cue the drama: Both Lucia and Rocco want the room. 😅 So we had to get strategic.
At first, we told them: “Whoever is the best behaved this week gets the room.” But pretty quickly I realized… we’re going to need a way to actually track this. So I made a scorecard. Yup—created it on Canva, printed it, laminated it, and now we’re using dry erase markers to track behaviors each day.
Here’s how it works:
• The goal: Whoever has the most points by Sunday wins the room.
• They start each day with whatever points they ended with the day before.
• There’s a list of positive behaviors (to earn points) and negative behaviors (that lose points).
• At the end of the day, we tally everything up!
Today is Day 1, and honestly… so far, so good! The kids are listening better, pausing before reacting, getting along more, and even looking for ways to earn points. 🥹
If this sounds like something you’d want to try in your house, let me know! I’ll share the Canva template I made so you can customize it for your own kiddos. Send me a DM or drop a comment and I’ll get it to you!
We could all use a little help navigating sibling dynamics—and while the novelty may wear off eventually, I’m staying committed. Because if they want that room… they’ve gotta earn it.
