No two days are ever the same in the fire service. Today, members of Engine 3, Rescue 1 and Car 2 responded to a call to assist Animal Control to help rescue a blue heron that had a fishing line tangled tightly around its leg. While most people think of fire trucks and house fires, sometimes our job means stepping in to protect all members of our community, wildlife included. Glad we could help this beautiful bird get the care it needed!

Yesterday, the City of Lowell, MA ‘s First Responders came together for a day of team-building and friendly competition. After being challenged by Lowell Police, Lowell Fire stepped up to the plate for a softball game. It was a nail-biter, but of course we came out on top!

Final Score:
Jakes – 19
Sheepdogs – 18

Events like these bring out the best in us and highlight the strong camaraderie between our Departments. Great game, Lowell Police— let us know when you’re ready for that rematch!

The World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) is currently being held in Birmingham, Alabama. This Olympic-style competition features thousands of athletes representing First Responder Agencies of various entities worldwide. The Games are held biennially, giving athletes the opportunity to compete in many different sporting events. This year, one of our members competed in several events, including wrestling, judo, and jiu-jitsu. He is even coming home with four gold medals and a bronze! Congratulations, FF Ryan Underwood— You have made the City of Lowell, MA and Local 853 so proud.

Ryan says he is looking forward to seeing more of our surrounding Locals and Departments compete in Australia for the 2027 Games. You better bring your A-game if you want a crack at his titles though!

Yesterday, we teamed up with our mutual aid partners at Chelmsford Fire/Local 1839 for a multi-agency training exercise which focused on relay pumping operations. The scenario pushed our resources to the max—relaying water from a supply engine through an attack engine to support a ladder pipe operation.

In simple terms, the supply engine pushes large volumes of water from the hydrant, through the engine, and into the attack engine. The attack engine then takes in that water, pressurizes it, and pumps it to the attack lines for effective fire suppression.

Relay pumping is a complex task, even within a single department, requiring seamless communication, coordination, and timing. Add another department into the mix, and the challenge grows—but so does the opportunity to learn and improve together.

With multiple moving parts—supply engines, attack engines, and aerial apparatus—training like this is essential. Drills like these ensure we’re prepared to work effectively side-by-side when the real call comes in.

A huge thank you to CFD Training Captain, Erik Byam and our very own Training Captain, Herman Sousa for setting up this exercise. Strong partnerships like these are what make mutual aid work.

Special thanks to Fire buff JB Photography for capturing the day!

FireFighter Sunday is a longstanding tradition that holds deep meaning for the Lowell Fire Department and our Members.

Local 853 would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who came out to support us yesterday. It was truly incredible to see so many residents up early to watch the procession and honor the tradition with us. This was a beautiful send off for the Members we lost this year.

We are also especially grateful to the many city and state officials who joined us to show their support, including:
Councilor Corey Robinson
Councilor Erik Gitschier
Councilor Rita Mercier
Councilor Paul Ratha Yem
Councilor Corey Belanger
Mayor Dan Rourke
State Representative Rodney Elliott
State Representative Vanna Howard
State Representative Tara Hong
City Council Candidate Erin Gendron
City Council Candidate Jose Cervantes

Your presence and continued support has not gone unnoticed. Thank you and we hope to see you all next year!

The firefighters tradition of honoring and remembering those no longer with us is a very touching ceremony. As Chief Charron was speaking about what this profession means to their communities, there were a few sentences that really resonated, “ whether a resident is sick, hurt, or in need of help, we bring calm to chaos”.

Thank you to all of those that have, currently do, and will in the future, provide that calm to the chaos our communities rely on. It was an honor to be a guest at this remembrance ceremony.
