Certain medications are notorious for causing dysbiosis – a disruption in your gut's microbiota (bacteria, fungi, and viruses). This can lead to bacterial overgrowth, insufficiency, and all kinds of gut-related problems πŸ”„β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹
The potential issues extend beyond the gut, impacting overall health. πŸ˜• Digestive discomforts like bloating, gas, diarrhea, or constipation might be red flags. But that's not all – dysbiosis could be the root issue behind fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, and skin issues.

If you've been on these medications in the past or currently for an extended period of time and notice these symptoms, it's time to investigate.

πŸ’Š Medication-induced issues might be the cause. And remember, factors like diet, stress, or pathogen exposure could also be contributing.

Psst...the GI-Map is one of my go-to test for gut and related issues. See the "..& More" link in my bio.

Save for reference next time you're restocking your groceries ↗️*DISCLAIMER*
I am a huge believer in bio-individuality. It's so important to remember that each of us is totally and completely unique, therefore our dietary needs are as well.

Meaning that this list (or any "eat this not that" list) is unique to the individual. If you don't feel great after you eat almonds, for example, don't eat them!

There is always a lot of confusion around what to eat and what not to eat, and the main thing to remember is this- become more in tune with your body and your energy and how YOU feel after you eat certain foods.

What foods make you feel great? What foods don't? And maybe slightly cooked vegetables agree with you (they are much easier to digest) than raw. Then do that!

However, some of the top inflammatory foods to limit for most people no matter what include fried foods, processed meats, alcohol, refined carbs, artificial sweeteners, vegetable oils, and high-fructose corn syrup.

What's your favorite thing on this list?

Thanks for the inspiration for this post, 🍊

πŸ₯š Daily protein requirements, like most things in our health, are not a one-size-fits-all recommendation.⁣
A few questions you can ask yourself to determine your protein intake:

πŸ€”Are you wanting to build muscle?
πŸ€”Lose body fat?
πŸ€”Maybe both?
πŸ€”Or maybe you just want to maintain your weight?

As a GENERAL rule, aim to hit 75% of your body weight in grams of protein/day. I.E., if you weigh 165 pounds, try to get around 120 grams per day.

How active you are, your current body weight, and your goal body weight, will all factor into how much protein you should be consuming.

For example, if you’re trying to lose fat + build muscle, you’d probably want to shoot closer to 100% of your body weight in grams of protein/day.

However, fad diets like keto and the like can be harmful long-term or for certain people.

The most important thing to remember about nutrition is this: IT IS BIO-INDIVIDUAL.

If you have three or more of these traits ⬆️ you likely have metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, according to and it affects more than 3 million Americans every year.

The good news is that metabolic syndrome is completely reversible. In my upcoming posts, I'll discuss some action steps you can take to work towards better health.

"Can't my Doctor just run these?"

I get this question a lot. It makes sense to have your blood work ran through insurance and your MD.

And it's a beautiful thing when it works!
(I believe in this idea so much that I put together a free "Blood Labs Master List" to print and take to your MD)

But many times, it doesn't work out like you would imagine.

You may be met with a physician who is either unwilling or unable to interpret your results because it's much more time consuming for them and out of their norm.

You've already ventured away from their traditional scope by seeking out a root cause approach. There may be a tendency for certain labs to be left off because they seem "irrelevant" to the physician, and as soon as this happens- you've already lost the autonomy your asking for over your health.

My general advice on this: You're going to want to run these labs with someone who's just as invested in what your results say as you are.
