Torticollis, also know as Wryneck is a common diagnosis in Newborns that Physical Therapists can treat.

Torticollis can be present at birth or develope after birth but usually within the first 6 months of life. Torticollis can be caused due to a tightness or deformity of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle or due to the position your child was in the womb. Tramatic birth, Fibrosis (thickening of muscle tissue), or Hematomas (collection of blood) are also common causes. This is usually easily recongnized during the evaluation with the pediatrician.

What are some signs or symptoms of Torticollis?
▪ Head tilted to one side
▪ Limited head movement
▪ Preferred side to feed on or trouble breast feeding
▪ Increased muscle tension in the neck muscles
▪ Plagiocephaly (flat spot on one side of the head)

Helpful tips to ensure you are sitting with good posture!

▪ Adjust your workspace so your screen is eye level or just below
▪ Avoid excessive wrist flexion
▪ Keep feet flat on ground or on a foot rest
▪ Keep a straight back, a chair with good lumbar support or use of a lumbar roll will help with this
▪ Avoid staying in one position for an extended period of time, get up and move around

The load of a backpack for both adults and children should be no more than 10% of the persons body weight.

50 lb bodyweight = backpack of 5 lbs or less
70 lb bodyweight = backpack of 7 lbs or less
110 lb bodyweight = backpack of 11 lbs or less
150 lb body weight = backpack 15 lbs or less
