Today is National Chiropractic Founders Day! The very FIRST chiropractic adjustment took place Sept. 18, 1895. The history of chiropractic began when Dr. Daniel David Palmer met Harvey Lillard, a partially deaf janitor. When Dr. Palmer asked Lillard what happened, he replied: “I moved the wrong way, and I heard a ‘pop’ in my back, and that’s when I lost my hearing.” It was on this day Dr. Palmer asked Lillard into his office and persuaded him to lay flat on his stomach. Dr. Palmer examined Lillard’s back, found a vertebra was out of place and gave a sharp thrust with his hands to put the vertebra back into place. The next day, Lillard told him for the first time in 17 years, he could once again hear the sounds of the streets.

Another fun fact: Dr. Palmer developed the term ‘chiropractic’ which comes from the Greek words cheir (meaning ‘hand’) and praktos (meaning ‘done’), i.e. done by Hand.

We carry backpacks from kindergarten to college and may think back strain is a natural result but that’s not true. There should be NO strain on your neck and back from carrying a backpack.

Studies show carrying a backpack can put a force that’s 7.2 times the weight of the backpack on the spine! This increases to 11.6 times if hunched over.

When shopping for back-to-school, here are tips to avoid back pain, no matter your age:

🟠 Roll it!: rolling backpacks are a surefire way to keep the weight and pressure off your back and on the ground.

🟠 Fix your posture: the natural inclination is to lean forward to compensate for the weight but check yourself in a mirror – and then stand up straight. Also consider this: carrying a heavy backpack can change your spinal alignment altogether, potentially leading to long-term issues.

🟠 Lose the load: think ahead to what you REALLY need in your backpack for the day. Kids should not carry more than 10 to 20 percent of their total body weight. For adults. It should not be more than 15 to 20 percent.

🟠 Check your straps: Tighten the straps to ensure the weight is properly distributed. Padded straps also help as they’re often wider than your typical backpack. The padding can also help reduce pinching in the trapezius muscle. (Remember that post we just put up last week? It’s one of the larger muscles in your back and is shaped like a triangle, connecting your neck and back.)

🟠 Come on in: If you try all of these tips and you still have back pain and strain, give us a call. There may be an underlying condition.

After an adjustment, the doctor may recommend icing your sore muscles.

Why? The cold restricts your blood flow and reduces swelling by decreasing circulation to the area and causing further inflammation, in addition to numbing the area.
