Minister Cynthia Jean Brown Butler, 64, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 11 am at Greater St. James Baptist Church. Private Disposition under the direction of Griffin Mortuary. Minister Cynthia Jean Brown Butler wore many hats in her lifetime. Daughter, wife, mother, student, administrator, teacher, missionary, world traveler, minister, prayer warrior. She spent most of those years in love with the Lord Jesus and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, having received the Lord at the age of thirteen. If you ever met Cyndy and asked her what she was passionate about, she would first ask you about you. She wanted to know how your life was going. She believed in healing hugs. The type that would make you want to cry. The type that made you feel loved.

She leaves behind in her passing, her beloved only daughter Ashley Inez Gresham, her grandchildren, Josiah 'My Boy', Gideon, and granddaughter Shiloh, sisters Allie Wilson, Min. Sharon Rose, nieces Keely Wilson, Randi Wilson, nephews Ryan Vance, (Latoya), Jordan Vance, Jason Wilson. All of which, she was more like a second Mom.

Cynthia was born in 1961 in St. Louis, MO. to Rev. Richard and Gracie Brown. After graduating high school, she spent many, many years furthering her education focusing primarily on her Social Work degree. She spent her life giving and helping others reach their goals and dreams of becoming their best selves. It wasn't a hobby, it was a calling. She felt it was her assignment and she served it well. She leaves behind many, other family members, cousins, nieces and nephews,

friends, and coworkers in the service of our Lord. She will be greatly missed.

Vernell Thomas, age 78, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away on May 13, 2026. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11:00 a.m. at Griffin Mortuary Chapel. Private Disposition under the direction of Griffin Mortuary.

Vernell Thomas was born August 8, 1947 in Panola County, to Earnest Thomas Sr. and Lillie Mae Brown. Vernell received his education in Shreveport, LA. He was a hard worker, who worked in the oil fields over 30 years in Hobbs, New Mexico.


He loved his family and when he smiled he brightened up the room. All the nieces and nephews loved him and he was the “Cool” uncle.

He is preceded in death by his mother Lillie Mae Brown, his father Earnest Thomas Sr., his brothers Earnest Thomas Jr. and Howard Thomas, his sisters Mary Cole and Lucy Thomas.

He is survived by his sisters Eva Morgan and Maggie Bunton, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He will be missed.

Though our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we trust in God’s will and find peace in His plan as Rodney Davis gained his wings and made his transition from this life to eternal rest.

Rodney Davis, affectionately known as “RD,” was born on August 1, 1967, in Lubbock to Curtis Ray and Flossie Mae Davis. A strong and dependable man, Rodney lived his life with courage, integrity, and a deep commitment to those he loved. He departed this life on May 12, 2026, in Lubbock, leaving behind a legacy of strength, loyalty, and generosity.

As we gather to reflect on the life of Rodney, we carry with us the strength of his spirit, the wisdom of his words, and the unwavering love he shared with all who had the privilege of knowing him. RD will forever be remembered for the impact he made on the lives of many, and the genuine kindness he extended to everyone he encountered. Rodney dedicated 16 years of faithful service to University Medical Center, where he worked as an X-ray file clerk. Beyond his professional career, Rodney was known throughout the community for his gifted hands and strong work ethic. As a lifelong handyman, he took pride in helping others whenever there was a need. His craftsmanship and willingness to serve left a lasting mark on countless people. Rodney found his greatest joy in spending time with his family and friends. He was famous for “throwing down” on the BBQ grill, bringing people together with good food, laughter, and love. Whether he was cooking, entertaining, or simply enjoying the company of those closest to him at The Shady Rest, Rodney created memories that will forever be treasured. His warm presence, generous spirit, and love for fellowship made everyone feel at home in his company.

As a proud graduate of Estacado High School, Class of 1985, Rodney made his mark both on and off the field. Known for his athleticism, determination, and competitive spirit, Rodney excelled in track and football, where he stood out as a talented running back for the Estacado Matadors. During his high school career, Rodney helped lead Estacado to numerous accomplishments, including district championships, state semifinal appearances, and a memorable appearance in the Texas state championship game. His dedication and skill earned him Special Mention All-State and All-Area honors. Rodney’s passion for the game continued beyond high school into his collegiate career, where his achievements and contributions were later recognized by the NIU Huskies Hall of Fame. In 2015, he was also honored as part of the Hall of Honor class by the Lubbock Independent School District, a testament to the lasting impact, talent, leadership, and dedication to excellence.

Rodney leaves behind his devoted wife, Wanda; his beloved daughters, Shatedra and RaTasha; sons, Eric and Rayvin. He also shared a special bond with bonus sons, Chris, Kendrick, and Kendell. Rodney was a proud grandfather to 23 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, all of whom brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by his brother, Kenneth(Jackie), and shared an especially close bond with his nephew, ArTory. Sheila Quigley remained a lifelong friend to Rodney and was the loving mother of his daughters. Their enduring bond was rooted in years of shared memories, mutual respect. Cierra, Melvin, LaKeysha, Marilyn, and Dametria, along with their children and grandchildren, also share many everlasting memories. Rodney leaves to cherish everlasting memories and special bonds with some amazing cousins, aunts and uncles, and a host nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Rodney was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Curtis Ray and Flossie Mae Davis. He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Robert and Dessie Davis, and his maternal grandparents, Leroy and Rosie Hicks. Their love, guidance, and lasting influence remained woven into the foundation of his life.

Rodney will forever be remembered for the impact he made on the lives of many.

Janice Delores Weaver Rodgers, passed away on March 31, 2026. Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, June 6, 2026 from 2 pm to 5 pm. Private Disposition under the direction of Griffin Mortuary. Janice was the first born to James Rodgers Jr. and Bobbie Grant Rodgers-Foreman.

Preceding her in death was her parents, son: Gregory James Rodgers, two sisters: Avis Henry (Billy), Patricia Jackson (Willard), One brother: Clifford Lee Rodgers (Cheryl).

Janice married Otha Weaver "also preceding her in death" they had two children, Gregory James Rodgers and Angela Renee Weaver. Janice gave birth to another son, Michael Williams .

Janice was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Dallas Texas where she was a member of the marching band as a flute player.

Janice united with Lee Chapel AME church at an early age.
Her hobbies included cooking, music, excersing, being a professional fitness trainer and a host of other activities.

Janice along with her younger son moved to Lubbock Texas around 2014 where she became head cook at Texas Tech University.

Surviving family includes 5 brothers, James Rodgers III (Becky), Larry Rodgers (Lillie), Glen Rodgers, Victor Rodgers, Durrell Rodgers (wife), 2 sisters, Sharon Rodgers Brown, Sherry Rodgers, Stepfather Willie Foreman, a host of nephews, nieces, aunt, uncle, relatives and friends.

Timothy was known for his joyful spirit and kind heart. He was born on November 9, 1989, in Lubbock, Texas. He loved watching sports, especially cheering on the Dallas Cowboys. He also enjoyed listening to music — a little country and a lot of R&B — which brought him great happiness.

Timothy was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ann Anthony.

Those left to cherish his memory include his sister, Lillian Borella and husband Wesley; his beloved niece, Madison Borella; the STAR and DNS communities; Ms. Annie Fillmore; and his extended families, the Davis and West families, along with many friends and loved ones.

Ellis Atkins, Sr., 86, departed this life and entered into eternal rest on Friday, May 1, 2026. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, May 15, 2026 at 1 pm at Community Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the City of Lubbock Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Mortuary. Visitations will be held Thursday, May 14, 2026 from 4 pm to 6 pm at Griffin Mortuary. Ellis Atkins, Sr. was born in Marlon, Texas on October 22, 1939, to the parentage of Frank Sr. and Arlena Atkins. He moved to Lubbock with his family in 1948, where he went to public schools. He attended Dunbar High School where he played football and met the love of his life, Eddie Green, they married in 1958 and to that union six children were born. He worked at Bigham Sheet Metal and Farm Pack for many years until the closing of the business. Ellis was very active in the lives of many youth while coaching little league baseball and YFL football. He loved to fish, hunt, and one of his favorite pastimes was BINGO. He was a founding member of the Community Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir and a member of the Usher Board, and was very protective of his family.

Ellis is preceded in death by his parents Frank Sr. and Arlena Atkins, two brothers Frank and Frank Charles as well as three other brothers, five sisters Lessie Fields, Izana Allen, Cora Jamison, Ceola Walker, and Lucille Rose, two sons Ellis Atkins Jr. and Avery Atkins, two great grandsons Martreal Walker Jr. and Braylon Culver.

Lucio Garza Jr., age 79, departed this life and entered into eternal rest on May 5, 2026. -Visitations will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Griffin Mortuary Chapel. Private disposition will follow under the direction of Griffin Mortuary.

Lucio Garza Jr was born in Bryan, Texas and moved to Lubbock, Texas in 1952. He started to work at Baldridge Bakery in 1964, where he met his wife Natividad Luera and married on December 3 1965.

In 1967, his first son Abel was born. In 1969, Lucio went to work for McWhorter’s Tire and was one of the best tireman in Lubbock; he worked for McWhorter’s for 42 years and retired. His second son Jesse Joe was born in 1973. He went back to work and started to work for United Supermarkets for 10 years. Besides working Lucio loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Showing his grandson Zaiden how to ride his first bicycle. Lucio loved to go fishing, watching WWE wrestling, and The rifleman show and going to the West Texas speedway Racetrack on the weekends also the flea market. He also enjoyed gambling. He always said a prayer before he ate. His favorite NFL football team is The Dallas Cowboys. His favorite college football team is The Texas A&M Aggies and he liked all kinds of music. He loved metallica, Vicente Fernandez and oldies. He helped a lot of people out and he made a lot of new friends at Lubbock Hospitality where he lived for 4 years.

He is preceded in death by his father Lucio M. Garza Sr, his mother Maria Luisa Garza, his brothers Luis Garza and Jesse Garza, his sisters Mary Jane Perez, Mary Helen Days, and Sara G Carta, his granddaughter Cecily Garza.

He was raised in Slaton, Texas with Lillian Martin, his grandmother and Sidro Martine (grandfather).

Gerry moved to Lubbock, Texas after graduating from Slaton High School. He was an employee of Plains Co-op Oil Mill until his health failed. Gerry was a devoted son to his mother, he chose not to marry or have children while he was taking care of his mother and younger siblings. Gerry was baptized at an early age. He changed and started studying as a Jehovah Witness until his death. Gerry loved the Dallas Cowboys and all sports. His greatest joy was his family. He was kind hearted and always willing to help anyone that needed it.

He is preceded in death by his father Herbert Hammons, his mother Mattie Taylor, his grandmother Lillian Martin, his grandfather Sidro Martin, his sister Shirley Dobbins, his brothers Kenneth Taylor and Corrila Hammons.

Bobbie Lucille Isaac-Nealy, 75, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2026. Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, May 8, 2026 at 2 pm at First Progressive Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the City of Lubbock Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Mortuary. Viewing will be held Thursday, May 7, 2026, from 4 pm to 6 pm at Griffin Mortuary.

Bobbie Lucille Isaac was born on December 4, 1950, in Lubbock, TX to James Isaac and Allie Mae Dial. After Allie Mae Dial fell ill, James Isaac married Imatha Washington, who warmly welcomed Bobbie Isaac and her brother Frank James Isaac into her family. Bobbie attended Iles Elementary School and Dunbar Struggs.

In 1966, Bobbie met Curtis Ray Nealy, the love of her life. Two years later she married him, becoming Bobbie Lucille Nealy. They were blessed with two handsome sons.

Bobbie retired from Texas Instruments after 27 years, then later worked at the Walker House. She was a member of St. Matthews and sang in the choir. In her free time Bobbie enjoyed shopping at Goodwill Stores and traveling. She would call her niece, Tina Martin, and suggest visiting Fort Worth, TX to see her niece Sandra K. Martin and go shopping and dining out. Her favorite meal consisted of two whole catfish and coca-cola classic.

We knew of three things that Bobbie was very particular about; her dog Lucy, whom she loved deeply, her dressing up in her leopard print outfit and flaunting her jewelry, especially her rings.

Bobbie Lucille Isaac-Nealy is preceded in death by her father James Isaac, her mothers Allie Mae Dial and Imatha Washington, her husband Curtis Ray Nealy, her brothers Henry Martin, Edward Gene Martin “Flea,” James Howard Martin, and Henry Earl Martin, her sisters Celestin “Polly” Rboinson, Willie Sten (Genice), and Janice Marie Isaac.

Bobbie Lucille Isaac-Nealy leaves behind to cherish her memory, her sons Curtis Nealy (April) and Isaac Nealy (Jocelyn), her brothers Frank James Isaac (Judy), and Larry D. Isaac (Retta), her sisters Annie Helen White and Deloris Petties, her grandchildren Tasha Nealy, Kevin, Zadrianna Guerrero-Nealy, Catarine Nealy (Roger), Oliva Brennon (Abagail), Daejha Nealy (TyWon), Laila Nealy (Lee), and Elijah, Kash, and Ihikia, her 13 great grandchildren, special niece Jermeka Isaac, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Rhyhine Brashawd Owens on April 16, 2026. Rhyhine is the son of Sandra and Charles Owens. Rhyhine was a loving husband and father to his wife Clara Owens, and two sons Javaughn Owens and Rhyhine Owens Jr and daughter Destiney Owens. His legacy continues to live on through his grandchildren Jamariyanna Liara Owens, Amecia Rae Owens, Aamarion Legend Owens, and JèèMarion Prince Owens.

He is survived by many family members including his sisters Candra Duncan, Melissa Agwata, and Kaala Drones, nephews Joriah Drones, Kodi Russell, Kwamaine Russell, Charles Thomas Jr, and Jaquobe Jordan Zacheus Russell and, nieces JaNiah Drones, Shakira Russell, Alaejia Russell, Brinajah Sumberlin and Genesis Russell and aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Mary Burse, born February 7, 1958, in Brownfield, Texas, to Tommie Jean Burse and Dorsie Charles Burse, Sr., lived a life marked by strength, loyalty, and unmistakable presence. A proud graduate of Brownfield High School’s Class of 1976, Mary went on to build a career rooted in service and justice. She worked for the Police Department, the WTISF, and later became a paralegal, earning her associate degree and using her skills to advocate for others.

Mary’s life took her to San Diego, California, and Savannah, Georgia, before she returned home to Texas. No matter where she lived, she carried her love for family, music, and travel with her. She was unapologetically herself—bold, outspoken, unforgettable—and she touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her. Whether vibing to Tupac or Michael Jackson, sharing stories, or offering her honest perspective, Mary made her presence felt.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Tommie Jean Burse; her father, Dorsie Charles Burse, Sr.; her brother, Micheal Jones Burse; and her sister, Doris Jean Burse-Ward.

Mary leaves behind a legacy of love through her children, LaToshia L. Burse, Erica R. Johnson, and Ashley L. Johnson; her sisters and sisters‑in‑law Debbie Romero Burse and Janice Lacy; her brothers Dewayne Burse and Dorsie Charles Burse, Jr.; and her grandchildren Armani R. Burse, Auburnay M. Burse, and Jaire Johnson. She is also cherished by six nieces, twelve nephews, and a host of extended family and friends who will forever hold her memory close.
