The Institute of Anatomical Sciencesโ€™ technologically advanced facility and Willed Body Program donors give faculty, staff and students the opportunity to work on the human body and learn the skills they need as health care professionals.

Six years ago, Texas Tech University opened its Institute of Anatomical Sciences. Its capabilities and capacities were quickly tested by the COVID-19 pandemic and since then has continued to serve doctors and donors across the region through its educational services and its Willed Body Program.

Last week, โ€œPilgrimโ€ donors of The Big Cure, a partnership between and the John Wayne Cancer Foundation, celebrated a major milestone: the Big Cure Endowment surpassed its $10 million fundraising goal, reaching $11.3 million! The endowment supports solutions to improve care in rural and underserved communities, including access to specialized physicians, advanced resources and the latest treatment options.

During the gathering, Ethan Wayne shared that it was his father John Wayneโ€™s dying wish to have his name used to fight cancer. Since then, the foundation has helped establish more than 160 John Wayne Alumni Fellows who now treat cancer patients nationwide.

Building on this momentum, TTUHSC recently received approval from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to establish a Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program, making it one of only 43 institutions in the United States and Canada to offer this advanced training. This program will launch in collaboration with UMC Health System.

Last week, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at the Permian Basin, along with the Permian Strategic Partnership and the Scharbauer Foundation, Inc., announced a gift that will fund a new pediatric residency!

Together, a $4.3 million gift from the Permian Strategic Partnership, a $3.5 million from the Scharbauer Foundation and a $7.9 million commitment from TTUHSC, will enable local pediatric training while helping build and retain a strong workforce of pediatricians to serve the regionโ€™s children and families.

The residency program will address a critical health care shortage of pediatric and pediatric subspecialists in the Permian Basin. Currently, families often must travel outside the Permian Basin to seek care and face long wait times to see a provider.
