Today, as a professor in the Ttuhsc- Department of Surgery, Dr. Rumbaugh has developed a research niche in the areas of burn wound infections and biofilms.

Approximately 75% of pregnant women experience pain, and 25% experience pain on a level that qualifies as disabling musculoskeletal pain – meaning they can't function.

Deborah Y. Edwards, PT, DPT, assistant program director for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Health Professions Doctor of Physical Therapy program in Odessa, tells us there are hurdles to optimum musculoskeletal care for expecting mothers and antepartum lumbopelvic pain: ambiguity over provider roles, lack of consensus for best practice with this patient population and fear of harm or liability.

Dr. Deborah Y. Edwards, PT, DPT, ScD, OCS, discusses musculoskeletal care during pregnancy.

As part of ongoing efforts to expand collaborative student learner experiences, representatives from traveled to Hemphill County Hospital District in Canadian, Texas. This visit marked a continuation of our partnership aimed at strengthening rural training opportunities for health care students.

Hemphill County Hospital and the broader Canadian community have developed an exceptional, community-engaged model that supports learners who rotate through their hospital and clinic. Their commitment to welcoming and mentoring future healthcare professionals has created a strong foundation for immersive rural health education.

TTUHSC is actively working to build and formalize pathways that enable our students to engage in meaningful, hands-on rural rotations in places like Canadian. These experiences are not only vital for exposing students to the realities and rewards of rural health care, but also serve as a strategic recruitment tool, helping to cultivate interest in long-term rural practice and community connection.

The trip further solidified mutual goals and next steps toward expanding learner placements, with shared enthusiasm for building a pipeline of health professionals who are both prepared and inspired to serve in rural Texas.
