After many dedicated years of providing compassionate care, Dr. Suzanne A. Beck will be retiring and transitioning away from practicing medicine full-time, effective September 18, 2022. We are incredibly honored to have had the opportunity to work alongside Dr. Beck and hope she finds the joy and relaxation she deserves in this new chapter of her life!

The Allergy & Asthma Clinic of West Texas and AllerVie Health are committed to serving our patients and ensuring you have a smooth transition of care! If you already have an appointment scheduled with Dr. Beck after September 18, for your convenience, that appointment will be rescheduled with one of our other amazing providers. For a period of time, Dr. Beck will remain available as a medical consultant and will continue to see patients on a limited part-time basis.

We want to reassure you that as part of the national AllerVie Health network, we remain committed to providing high-quality allergy and asthma care and continuing to serve the Lubbock community! If you have any questions about this transition, please feel free to call us at (806) 799-4192.

The AAFA and MedicAlert Foundation created a campaign to help raise awareness about asthma and anaphylaxis. The campaign aims to ensure people manage their conditions to the best of their ability and help prevent life-threatening medical emergencies.

This campaign is Make a Pact to "ACT" for Asthma and Allergies.
“A” refers to your action plan for asthma or anaphylaxis.
“C” refers to carrying your emergency medicines and a copy of your action plan with you everywhere you go.
“T” refers to the treatment plan you’ve created with the help of your allergist.

This month we will dive deeper into "ACT" and provide resources to help ensure you manage your allergies and asthma to the best of your ability.

When it comes to dust mites, vacuuming thoroughly is more important than how often you vacuum. By deep cleaning once and ensuring you get the places where dust mites tend to be like draperies, mattresses, and padded furniture, you can reduce the number of dust mites in your home.

What do food allergies and pet allergies have in common? They can both be problematic in a relationship.

Since we discussed pet allergies and ways to manage your allergy symptoms last week, it's time to discuss food allergies.

You might not automatically associate a food allergy as being problematic in a relationship, but what if your partner eats something containing an allergen and then kisses you? Or cooks dinner and incorporates the allergen into the food? Here are some things you can do to minimize your symptoms/flare-ups.

1. Be clear about your allergy
2. Think before you kiss - it's always a good idea to have your partner brush their teeth after eating food containing an allergen
3. Be prepared whether on a date or not - always carry your EpiPen

About 10% of the population has an allergy to pets. This is easy enough to avoid if you are one of the many who suffer from pet allergies, however, what happens when you start a relationship with someone who has a pet? Things can get tricky.

Besides removing yourself completely from the animal, there are things that you can do to help provide some relief.
1. Using a HEPA air filter
2. Using a HEPA-type vacuum cleaner
3. Non carpeted floors are preferred, but if you have carpet, frequent cleaning can help a room become more allergy-friendly
4. Designate a room as pet-free
5. The use of antihistames, prescription nasal sprays, and eye drops
