We’re proud to announce Covenant Medical Center is now offering Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), an advanced surgical treatment for patients with Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and other movement disorders.

Led by Neurologist Dr. Katie Hendley and Neurosurgeon Dr. Robert Scranton, our DBS program is designed to help patients regain independence, reduce symptoms, and improve overall quality of life.

Deep brain stimulation is a surgical procedure that involves implanting wires, or electrodes, in the brain and using safe and mild electrical impulses to stimulate them. This stimulation eases irregular body movements that can interfere with how a patient moves naturally and what they do in everyday life.

Clyde, our first DBS patient, has been living with Parkinson’s since 2021. Since receiving DBS treatment, Clyde has experienced significant improvement in his tremors. “I’m excited to see what all I can accomplish and would do it again in a heartbeat,” he shared.

As the only hospital in West Texas and eastern New Mexico offering this treatment, this milestone reflects our commitment to expanding access to innovative care that enhances quality of life for patients across our region.

"I recently met a patient during his hospitalization who wanted to share his story with me.
He told me several years ago he was a patient at Covenant Medical Center for four months while he battled COVID. He said 'Covenant saved my life' and proceeded to tell me about the specific people who made his experience 'less lonely and frightening' during his extended stay with us. He remembered his transporter, Diana, and his nurse, Mary.
During this current stay, Diana Torrez checked him into the unit. He said he felt an 'instant comfort and gratitude' that he would finally be able to personally thank her for the care she provided all those years ago. He brought Diana to tears by realizing the impact she had on him. He told her, 'Thank you, I will never forget you!' He raved about how Diana spoke Spanish to him, and how she was compassionate and sincere as she cared for him each time he traveled to Endoscopy.
Diana is a very hard-working person, and I am proud she is part of my team! She is not only our one and only CNA, she is our transporter and assists in the many other roles in the department. She truly is an angel and deserves to be recognized every day! The fact that this gentleman remembers her YEARS later speaks volumes of who she is!" -Velinda Betancur, Covenant Medical Center Endoscopy Supervisor

Diana's compassion, sincerity, and ability to bring comfort to others truly exemplify the spirit of healing we strive for every day. We’re incredibly grateful to have her on our team, making a lasting impact on every patient she encounters.

"I wanted to take a moment to share and commend the wonderful actions of Dorothy Shaw, who recently went above and beyond in demonstrating her compassion and dedication to our patients and their families. Dorothy noticed that a family member of a patient was struggling with walking, and that the patient's room was the furthest one from the exit door. Recognizing the inconvenience, Dorothy immediately took steps to help. She got a wheelchair for the family member and personally wheeled them to their vehicle outside, ensuring their comfort and safety. But she didn’t stop there. Dorothy then accompanied the family member to the café to get some lunch, staying with them to provide support and companionship before bringing them back to their room. Dorothy's empathy didn't end with this kind gesture. She discussed the situation with the charge nurse and successfully arranged for the patient's room to be changed to one closer to the exit door, making it more convenient for the family member. While this may seem like a small gesture, it truly exemplifies the compassion and care Dorothy consistently shows. Her actions have significantly impacted the well-being of the patient’s family, and it’s a testament to the values we uphold here. We should all take inspiration from Dorothy’s actions and continue to strive for excellence in the care and support we provide to our patients and their families." -Marla Daniels, Chief Nursing Officer, Covenant Health's Grace Surgical Hospital

Thank you to Care Integration Coordinator, Dorothy Shaw, for going the extra mile to ensure not only the patient but also their family member was cared for during a challenging time. Your dedication and compassion truly make a difference!
