School Psychology at Texas Tech

School psychologists use knowledge of psychology and education to develop and provide school interventions that help children to learn and succeed.

The School Psychology Specialization at Texas Tech prepares students to design and implement evidence-based prevention and intervention practices to address student learning, social-emotional development, behavioral performance, instructional methodology, school practices, classroom management, and other areas salient to school-based services and improving student outcomes among P-12 students including those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

What a week! The school psych students were on campus this week for summer intensive classes. They learned a lot, shared many laughs, and made core memories together. While a 100% online program would be convenient for many, it's times like these that remind us why face-to-face time is important. These in-person experiences cannot be replicated online, and this is one reason why we choose to be a hybrid program. We are all tired, but it was worth it to have quality time together.

Doctoral student, Rene Hernandez, is studying abroad in Salamanca, Spain this summer! Rene is a school psychologist in the metroplex, and when he heard about this unique opportunity, he eagerly submitted his application. He's having a fantastic time learning and site seeing, and we can't wait to hear about his experience!

They made it! This incredible cohort graduated yesterday with their master's degree. It was a bittersweet day, and we are so proud of each and every one of these ladies. Since their first semester in the program, this group has grown very close and supportive of one another. We are sad to see them leave us, but they are going to have such an impact on the students they serve. Welcome to the school psych life, and Wreck 'Em Tech! ❤️🖤

You can’t convince us that we don’t have the very BEST students at TTU! This weekend our first year master’s level school psych students had their final full day in person classes with Dr. Stevens and Dr. Chapman. Here’s to wrapping up another successful semester! Ms. Dani Vasquez is one of our school psychologists in training and was recently awarded an Innovative Teaching Grant totaling nearly $10,000 by the Kerrville Public School Foundation! Her grant, Empowering Positive Character Development at Daniels, will create a positive and respectful school culture, improve student behaviors, and enhance social-emotional learning for all students. The funds will be used to purchase materials and supplies to create a comprehensive character education program and classroom for the entire elementary campus to use. Congratulations, Dani!

Three of our pre-doctoral students completed their final internship class last night with Dr. Barbre and Dr. Chapman! Chris Ponce, Christian Herrera and Darcy Sandoval are ready to press forward through their dissertation experiences. Congrats on making it through this big step towards that PhD!

The final TTU School Psychology Internship site visit for the 2024-2025 academic year was way out in East Texas. This week Dr. Chapman made the trip to Tyler ISD to visit intern Kaela Brewington and her site supervisor Emily Phillips. One of Kaela’s campuses is Tyler Legacy High School, which is the home of the Red Raiders! ❤️🖤 Wreck ‘em Tyler!

Site visits for this week concluded with Dr. Chapman making a trip to Amarillo ISD to visit School Psychology Intern Jodi Orand and her supervisor Kim Hodge. Jodi lives in Pampa and makes the one hour drive (each direction) daily in order to serve the students of Amarillo ISD!

This week’s adventures in TTU School Psychology included a visit to see Intern Angelle Enriquez in Kerrville ISD! This district (along with their school psychologist supervisor Piper Perlichek and SPED Director Lynn Paulo) has been extremely supportive of our students over the years. They currently have Angelle, Jodi Werner and Katie Dorsey (practicum students), and Danise Leal (first year student) all serving in their district while enrolled in the TTU program. Dr. Chapman spent some time there checking in with our students and meeting with the SPED team to talk about all things FBA and BIPs. Wreck em Kerrville! ❤️🖤

This was an extra special couple of days spent road tripping to see some of our school psychology interns in rural West Texas to wrap up the week! Dr. Barbre joined Dr. Chapman to visit intern Cody Good at Lamb County SSA and intern Keelin Stewart at Haskell-Knox SSA!
