Congratulations to Dr. Griswold on his retirement. Here's to many happy years relaxing and enjoying time with his family. You’ve probably heard over the years that the John A. Griswold Level One Trauma Center at UMC is the only one of its kind between Dallas and Albuquerque. He has served as Director of the Burn Unit at UMC, which has grown significantly under his leadership, for 34 years. He has made it his life’s work training other surgeons, nurses and therapists. He is a surgeon who has likely trained most of the surgeons in Lubbock.

Dr. Griswold announces he is retiring to spend more time with his family, he says it will be hard to leave the many relationships he has developed with his colleagues and his patients.

Congratulations to Dr. Hannah Moore for being selected UMC House Staff of the Month for August.

“Advancing telehealth technology is a core part of our mission,” said Ariel P. Santos, M.D., TTUHSC Department of Surgery chair and principal investigator for the TexLa Telehealth Resource Center. “We are expanding into remote patient monitoring, using wearable devices to track heart health, glucose levels and other vital metrics, enabling providers to care for patients wherever they are,” he said. “We’re also exploring how artificial intelligence can strengthen health care delivery, particularly in rural areas and providing webinars and resources to help institutions adopt these innovations.”

The TexLa Telehealth Resource Center, based at TTUHSC, has been awarded a $1.3 million, four-year grant from HRSA to strengthen and expand digital health services in Texas and Louisiana.

An excellent article on our own Dr. Kendra Rumbaugh -- “It’s been 25 years now, so becoming a researcher at TTUHSC was a great decision. I think the environment here is so friendly and collaborative and collegial at the faculty level, and we’re given a lot of support to help us succeed as basic scientists. So, while I wasn’t really happy about that fork in the road at the time, it ended up being a wonderful decision and we’ve been really happy here.”

When Kendra Rumbaugh, PhD, (Biomedical Sciences ’01) enrolled in 1996 as a TTUHSC graduate student, she knew two things for certain: she wanted to go into some type of health care field and she didn’t want to go to medical school.

Due to recent medical breakthroughs, burn victims can now recover more fully through advanced laser therapy. Dr. Alan Pang, burn and trauma surgeon for Texas Tech Physicians, recognizes how these new procedures greatly improve the quality of life of his patients. This same laser therapy has also been able to improve scarring that patients, in some cases, suffered up to 50 years ago.
