On July 20, Nicky Napper, a strong and active 66-year-old who works full-time and manages his farm in Dawson County, was admitted to Covenant Medical Center with what was initially believed to be pneumonia.
Pulmonologist Dr. Marque Hunter quickly suspected something more serious. Additional tests revealed Nicky had suffered a heart attack.

The next day, Cardiologist Dr. Marina Iskandir performed an angiogram that uncovered severe blockage in his heart. Cardiac Thoracic Surgeon Dr. David Malave was consulted, and a few days later, Nicky underwent a successful triple bypass.

Throughout his recovery, Nicky and his family expressed that they were surrounded by compassionate care. Dr. Hunter, Dr. Iskandir, Dr. Malave, and Heather Greene, NP, checked in daily with not only medical updates, but also words of comfort and encouragement. They are also grateful for the incredible team on the unit, including his nurse Armondo, case manager Annette, and the physical and occupational therapy teams.

His daughter, a Covenant nurse of 10 years, shared:
ā€œAs a nurse myself for 16 years, and a Covenant employee for 10 years, this was my first time experiencing care from the other side. I could not be more proud to be part of this organization.ā€

Today, Nicky is doing well and continues to recover each day.

Covenant Medical Group is proud to bring a cutting-edge advancement in cardiac imaging to our patients in West Texas and eastern New Mexico with the launch of the region’s first Cardiac PET CT.

This innovative machine combines two powerful imaging technologies, emission tomography and computed topography, to give cardiologists a clearer, more complete view of the heart. This leads to more precise diagnosis and personalized treatment plans.

Cardiac PET-CT is a noninvasive scan that helps diagnose coronary artery disease, evaluate heart muscle viability after a heart attack, and identify microvascular dysfunction. It improved outcomes and helps patients avoid unnecessary procedures.

At Covenant Health, we’re committed to providing comprehensive care close to home, and proud to offer our communities access to the most advanced heart imaging technologies.

Talk to your cardiologist to learn if a Cardiac PET-CT is right for you.

"Kyla, a Clinical Research Nurse at Joe Arrington Cancer Center, demonstrated exceptional dedication and compassion during a recent staffing shortage in our infusion area. Kyla willingly stepped in to assist in the JACC lab, ensuring patients received timely care.

After completing blood work for her last patient, who was in a wheelchair and alone, Kyla noticed the patient needed help getting to her next appointment for an x-ray. Kyla personally escorted the patient to the radiology department, where the patient was immediately called for her x-ray. Rather than leaving, she waited for the exam to finish and then accompanied the patient to the medical oncology clinic, as the patient believed she had an appointment.

Upon checking in, it was discovered that the patient's appointment was scheduled for a later date. When the patient expressed she was feeling unwell, Kyla took the initiative to measure her blood pressure, which showed only a slight elevation. However, concerned about the patient's well-being, Kyla spent time talking to the patient to assess her condition further through conversation. She learned the patient was diabetic and hadn't eaten recently, prompting a blood sugar check. Her blood sugar levels came back normal, but Kyla suspected the patient needed more than just medical attention; she needed emotional support. She continued to sit with her, providing comfort through attentive conversation.

Eventually, the patient expressed she was feeling better and had taken enough of Kyla's time. Kyla then assisted her to her vehicle, ensuring she left safely. Kyla’s exemplary service, empathy, and commitment to patient care are commendable and show that every moment does matter." - Dawn Howerton, Clinical Research Manager, Covenant Health's Joe Arrington Cancer Center

Kyla's thoughtful actions and genuine concern for her patient's emotional and physical well-being truly exemplify compassionate care. Her empathy, attentiveness, and dedication make a meaningful difference in the lives of those she serves.

08/26/2025

We’re excited to share Covenant Children’s is building a specialized Small Baby NICU for premature infants born before 32 weeks. This new unit is designed to deliver quieter, safer, and more focused care for our tiniest patients.

The Small Baby NICU will include:
* Nine dedicated beds tailored for the unique requirements of these infants
* Lower lighting and noise levels to reduce stress and promote healing
* Less guest foot traffic to provide a calm, nurturing environment
* Enhanced infection control to protect vulnerable newborns against infection

As the region’s only licensed, free-standing children’s hospital, Covenant Children’s serves over 500 NICU patients annually. This expansion will not only improve outcomes for our smallest patient but also free up space in our regular NICU, bringing our total NICU capacity to more than 50 beds.

Thank you to our incredible donors for supporting this project. We are proud to continue advancing neonatal care and supporting families through every step of their journey. šŸ’™
