The Value of Christian Meditation
Many people are surprised to learn that meditation is not just a modern wellness trend—it’s a deeply biblical practice.
In fact, the word “meditate” appears more than 21 times in Scripture, especially throughout the Psalms and the wisdom books, where God’s people are encouraged to reflect on His Word, His works, and His ways.
Christian meditation is a spiritual discipline that involves filling the mind, not emptying it. This is what sets it apart from many forms of Eastern meditation.
While Eastern practices often emphasize detachment and mental emptiness, Christian meditation focuses on intentional engagement—directing the heart and mind toward God’s truth.
Scripture paints meditation as a way to:
✨ Draw near to God – “I meditate on all Your works and consider what Your hands have done” (Psalm 143:5).
✨ Anchor your mind in truth – “His delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2).
✨ Strengthen your faith – “I will meditate on Your precepts and fix my eyes on Your ways” (Psalm 119:15).
✨ Find peace in God’s presence – “On my bed I remember You; I think of You through the watches of the night” (Psalm 63:6).
Christian meditation is not passive; it’s active communion with God—thinking deeply about His Word, listening for His guidance, and allowing His Spirit to shape the inner life.
In a noisy, distracted and stressed-out world, this practice becomes even more vital. When we meditate on Scripture, we are reminded of what is eternal, what is true, and what is good. Our minds are renewed, our spirits re-centered, and our hearts strengthened.
So take time to slow down, breathe, open the Scriptures, and let the Word of Christ dwell richly in you.
