My goal for August is to get all of my windows cleaned inside and out.

I made this simple cleaner in one of the lessons in my aromatherapy course and it works like a dream! It's so easy to make you can't NOT do it.

We all know how well vinegar cleans and with the added benefit of these essential oils it's a welcome replacement for those chemical laden cleaners.

Peppermint essential oil is antibacterial and so is Lemon, plus they just smell great. Siberian Fir is an airborne antimicrobial and also a deodorant. You can also use this blend to clean mirrors, hard surfaces, etc. Make it in small batches so you can use it up because, of course it has no preservatives.

Let's talk about phototoxicity. What is that? Some essential oils can cause a chemical reaction on your skin and cause severe sunburn or skin discoloration if you apply them before going in the sun or a tanning bed!

Some phototoxic oils that you never want to use on your skin before being exposed to the sun are lemon, bergamot and grapefruit. As much as I love lemon and grapefruit they will never be in any of my skin products for that very reason.

Another fun fact - cold pressed lime is phototoxic, but distilled lime is not!

It may be a little unconventional, but I really love Arborvitae! Arborvitae is warm, woody, and deeply grounding.

I first used it when I started diffusing because I wanted to use something that I thought my husband would approve of to sort of initiate him into the world of essential oils. It makes the whole house smell like a woodworking shop! You know that smell of freshly cut wood? Mmmmmmm......the aroma can be calming and uplifting.

If woodsy scents are your thing, try Arborvitae! It's still my favorite.

In my studies for the aromatherapy certification, anatomy and physiology is also a required course. Our bodies are fascinating!

Our skin repels water but attracts oils and essential oils are easily absorbed into the skin, passing through the skin into the interior of our bodies. Carrier oils on their own are very good for your skin, but adding essential oils with various properties to the carriers is an extra bonus since they are absorbed as well!

Keep in mind that essential oils are powerful stuff and should very rarely if ever be used neat (that mean undiluted in a carrier).

The answer is yes! Children can benefit from natural remedies and the emotional and therapeutic benefits of essential oils as well as adults.

When working with children, the thing to keep in mind is that they are children - their bodies are tiny, so we have to adjust accordingly. Essential oils should never be used on children neat (undiluted), and rarely on adults. Dilution is key!
One drop of Rose Otto Essential Oil contains all of the petals from 30-50 roses! [Source: Andrea Butje, The Heart of Aromatherapy (Carlsbad, CA: Hay House, Inc., 2017), 6.] You can see how powerful they are!

One of my case studies currently is for a very young child. In the case of children, I would never go above a 1% dilution, and sometimes a hydrosol would be more in order. A hydrosol is the water portion that is generated when steam distilling essential oils and is very safe to use for children and pets. Hydrosol is also used to make sprays for beauty and skin issues and even linen spray.

Use of essential oils on children can be beneficial for them. Just keep in mind any safety issues. If you have any concerns about a specific oil for use with children, just ask me. I'll be happy to research it for you!
