At the end of a nurse's life, members of the Nurse Honor Guard step forward to pay tribute in a way only fellow nurses can.

The Nurse Honor Guard is a group of volunteer nurses - both active and retired - who honor fallen colleagues at memorials, funerals and visitations.

Meleah Mariani, RN, Ludington hospital’s chief nursing officer, remembers the first time she saw a ceremony in Lansing. “It's palpable in the room; you can just feel the emotion,” she said. "So many people come (up to us) afterward and just want to talk to us and thank us for being there.”

“It reminds us that nursing is not only how we serve during life, but how we honor one another when life comes to an end,” said Stephanie Junewick, RN, member of the Grand Rapids Area Nurse Honor Guard.

Thank you to every Nurse Honor Guard member for your dedication to honoring the profession and those who served it so selflessly.
