What happens when everything in your life becomes functional?
Efficient.
Practical.
Safe.
At some point, we stop choosing… and start defaulting.
I was reminded of this recently in a simple but surprisingly sharp way—through a set of plates and a memory of a promise I made to myself years ago. It brought me here, to this epiphany...
There’s a difference between eating and nourishing.
And that difference isn’t just about food—it’s about presence.
When you slow down, even a little, your body responds. You soften. You’re actually in the moment instead of moving past it.
This is where patterns hide.
Not in the big, obvious places, but in the small, repeated ways we move through our days.
When everything becomes utility, that sense of aliveness gets lost.
And part of this work—real, lasting change—is learning how to bring attention back to what’s right in front of you.
Not by adding more.
But by choosing differently.
