🎉 NICU Awareness Month Spotlight & 5 Years of Miracles! 🎉
Today, we're bursting with joy as we celebrate not one, but two incredible milestones: September is , and it's also the 5-year anniversary of the Level II NICU at St. Luke's Health-Memorial Lufkin! What better way to honor this than by sharing a truly heartwarming success story?
Introducing Baby Kassian Thompson, our newest little warrior who is finally going home after 59 days in our NICU! Born on July 14, 2025, Kassian holds a special place in our hearts as the youngest baby ever born at St. Luke’s Health-Memorial Lufkin, making his debut at a remarkable 30 weeks, weighing just 2 lbs 8 oz (1,150 grams).
Proud parents Grayam and Hannah Thompson are overflowing with happiness, and it's easy to see why! This adorable bundle of joy, loved by all his nurses for his mild-mannered personality (a trait he clearly inherited from his relaxed parents!), left the NICU on September 11, 2025, weighing a whopping 6 lbs 3 oz and 19 ¼” long! Our nurses were absolutely thrilled to witness his incredible growth by leaps and bounds.
The Thompson family's journey has been one of immense strength and love. After two miscarriages, Kassian is their first precious baby. Hannah bravely faced a challenging delivery, unable to be transported to a higher-level facility due to weather. But she wouldn't change a thing, praising the loving and caring support received from our dedicated NICU nurses, a sentiment mutually shared by our staff for these wonderful first-time parents.
Kassian's rich heritage shines through the medallion on his crib, connecting him to his Indian family from the Alabama Coushatta Reservation in Livingston – where he'll undoubtedly be "spoiled" by a big, supportive family, as dad Grayam (the oldest of 5!) proudly declared. And for all you fans out there, yes, his first name comes from the beloved galaxy far, far away! His middle name, Ray, honors a great-grandfather, a beautiful family tradition.
A huge thank you to our incredible NICU nurses! Your unwavering love, compassion, and tireless dedication make all the difference during the most stressful and emotional times in these families' lives. You truly are miracle workers!
This year, as we mark Five Years of Miracles at St. Luke's Health-Memorial Lufkin's NICU, we celebrate how this unit has transformed advanced care for East Texas. Our partnership with the nationally recognized Texas Children’s Hospital, championed by the vision of Dr. George Fidone and supported by the generous Mary K. and Clifford Grum Foundation, means that families like the Thompsons can receive specialized care for their tiniest fighters right here, close to home.

🎀 Get ready to VOTE for your favorite art bra! 🎀
Our incredibly talented designers have unleashed their creativity in support of breast cancer awareness, participating in the 2025 Power of Pink! Art Bra Contest!
This year's theme, "Laughter is Good Medicine," has brought forth some truly remarkable and unique creations. These art bras are more than just beautiful – they're a powerful, artistic reminder of the importance of breast cancer screening.
The Art Bra tradition started with a touching tribute: a woman honoring her mother who passed from breast cancer, creating a decorated bra from her belongings. That spark grew into a movement combining art, remembrance, and vital awareness.
The talent and creativity on display are absolutely ✨ phenomenal ✨. These finalist bras will be showcased on the runway at our annual Power of Pink! Luncheon, modeled by amazing community volunteers – get ready for some surprises and entertainment!
Stay tuned for voting details and a sneak peek at these inspiring works of art!

God’s work, our hands...the United Way.

St. Luke’s Health-Memorial launched its 2025 Angelina County United Way campaign with a good old Pie in the Face for a Purpose challenge.

The stakes were high. The players were hyped. The outcome was heart stopping.

A heartfelt thank you to our Champion, Matt Adams! Only 3 dollars separated the two people at the top of the Leaderboard.

Serving up the pie was Cindy Garcia who delivered the pie with grace, kindness and respect because ultimately the purpose is to support the Angelina County United Way and honor the work done by the non-profit agencies that it serves. Matt, being the warrior and humanitarian he is, graciously accepted.

We are equally grateful to all ten of our awesome contestants, who without hesitation agreed to be contenders. The finalist Leaderboard list:

🐻❤️ Big Bear Hugs for Our Heart Heroes! ❤️🐻
The incredible Volunteer Auxiliary at St. Luke's Health-Memorial is making a world of difference for our heart surgery patients, one "Cough Buddy Bear" at a time! These firm, wide bears provide crucial support, helping patients cough and breathe deeply without straining their incisions. Local physicians specifically requested them, knowing they offer more comfort and stability than a pillow. "There is nothing like a hug from a teddy bear," says Candy Wadsworth, VP, Volunteer Auxiliary. "We are glad to have the funds to provide the bears for our patients. Giving back to the community is important to the volunteers."

We're so grateful for our Volunteers keeping these essential bears flowing to the ICU! And as a special thank you, one anonymous patient even penned this heartwarming "Heart Care Bear" poem in appreciation.

HEART CARE BEARS

I’m a little teddy bear, just as cute as can be,
And I’m here to aid heart patients who need help post-surgery.
I’m plush and soft and cuddly, just begging for a squeeze,
And hugging me will help you when you need to cough or sneeze.
For while I’m cute and snuggly, I offer firm support,
And as you hold me to your chest, you’re sure to feel comfort.
While recovering from your surgery you may feel a bit unsteady,
So remember the surgeon's orders and be sure to hug your teddy.
