Ready for a heartstring tug?
Tiaerrah Mumford wanted to donate a kidney to her brother-in-law, Reginald Laroche, but she wasn’t a match. Ashleigh Haliabalias, a South Carolina nurse, had no specific recipient in mind. She simply wanted to help someone in need.
Their decisions led to something extraordinary.
Through MUSC Health’s living donor kidney exchange program, Tiaerrah turned out to be a match for Dontrell Sutton, a young man who had been on dialysis for five years and the kidney transplant waitlist for three.
Ashleigh was a match for Reginald, a Johns Island native and teacher at W.J. Keenan High School in Columbia who had been waiting for his miracle match for a year.
Four surgeries in one day. Two lives saved. Countless lives impacted. This is the difference living donation can make.
