Ian Smith, RN, an emergency medicine RN supervisor at Ochsner Medical Center - West Bank, was drawn to nursing through the values of community service instilled by his parents, both career public educators. 💙
Seeing his father’s strength when going through cancer treatments gave Ian a unique perspective on healthcare, one that was grounded in empathy, advocacy and support for people at their most vulnerable. He learned to see care through the patient and family’s eyes.
"He was incredibly proud of my career, and he often said my nursing graduation was one of his happiest days," Ian said. "I honor him every shift by being a steady, compassionate resource for patients facing their own traumatic events."
Now, as a supervisor in the emergency department, Ian oversees patient flow and wants to create a stable, supportive environment for both his team and patients, no matter how unpredictable the day may be.
"I thrive in the fast-paced nature of emergency medicine where no two days are the same," Ian said. "I enjoy the challenge of creating a stable, supportive environment for my team regardless of what walks through the door."
Ian is shaping the future of nursing by sharing his clinical knowledge with the next generation and developing streamlined processes that prioritize both patient safety and provider efficiency. He actively participates on committees and embraces new technology.
"The future lies in using smart tools to enhance patient safety while returning the 'human element' to the forefront of care," he said.
Thank you, Ian. Your compassion, vision and leadership inspire us all.
