🌞 Sólardag | A Devotional to Sunna🌞

“Sól ek sá, sá var álfröðull…”
“I saw the sun, she was the elf-disc…”
— Völuspá 5, Poetic Edda

Today is Sólardag: Sunday, the sacred day of Sól (Old Norse)/ Sunna (Old High German),.
The divine solar maiden who rides her radiant chariot across the sky.

🐎 The Solar Steeds and the Celestial Race⤵️

● Sól is described in the Prose Edda (Gylfaginning, ch. 11) as driving her chariot across the heavens, pulled by two horses:

Árvakr: "Early Waker"

Alsviðr: "All Swift"

The gods placed bellows under their shoulders to keep them cool as they race through the heavens. Sól's path is perilous, as she is relentlessly pursued by the monstrous wolf Sköll, child of the giantess Angrboða. His twin brother Hati chases the moon, Máni. This eternal pursuit represents the passage of day into night and the ever-present shadow beneath the light.

🔥 "She speeds ever onward, for Sköll is close, jaws wide to swallow her fire."- Paraphrased from Gylfaginning

🌿 Sunna’s Power in Witchcraft and Heathenry⤵️

Sól is healing fire and divine order.

Her light is used in folk magic for⤵️

• Purification: Burn sun herbs (calendula, marigold, sunflower, St. John’s Wort) to clear stagnant energy.

• Empowerment--> Charge tools or charms under the high sun for strength and clarity.

• Seiðr Visions: Practice solar-aligned trance work at noon, calling to Sunna for vision and protection.

🌞 Devotional Acts for Today⤵️

🕯️ Candle Offering: Light a golden, orange, or white candle and speak these words:

“Sunna, shieldmaiden of the sky, bright wheel of Miðgarðr,
May your light guard my steps and burn through shadow.”

🪶 Herbal Gift: Offer sunflower seeds, goldenrod, or chamomile outdoors or on your altar.

🧘🏽‍♀️ Meditation--> Sit in direct sunlight.
Breathe deeply.
Envision her radiant wheel moving overhead.
Feel her warmth entering your chest and filling your spirit with strength.

🌅 Prophecy and Legacy⤵️

In Vafþrúðnismál (st. 47), Óðinn learns from the wise jötunn Vafþrúðnir that though Sól shall be devoured at Ragnarök, her daughter shall be born anew to ride the sky in the reborn world.

“A daughter is born to the sun,
Before Fenrir devours her;
She shall ride when the gods have perished,
In her mother's path.”
— Vafþrúðnismál, st. 47

Thus, even in her destruction, Sunna is rebirth. She is the promise of dawn beyond the long night.

🌞 Blessing for the Day 🌞
“May Sunna’s chariot blaze clear above you,
May her golden reins guide your path,
And may no wolf steal your light.”

🌑✨ Laugardagr: The Sacred Day of Cleansing in the Norse Tradition ✨🌑

In Old Norse, Laugardagr means “Bath Day.” It was the day set aside for washing, purification, and renewal. To the Norse, cleansing was never merely about outward appearance it was a sacred act that prepared both body and spirit for meaningful work with the gods, ancestors, and spirits.

⚔️ Cleansing Before Ritual & Blót⤵️

Before entering a sacred space, it was expected that one approach in a state of respect and purity. The sagas and historical sources make it clear that washing before blóts and gatherings was an essential practice. Just as weapons were polished and clothing kept clean, the human body was ritually renewed with water.

Water itself carried power. Springs, rivers, and natural wells were seen as living forces of the cosmos. Urðarbrunnr, the Well of Wyrd beneath Yggdrasil, was described in the Poetic Edda as a source of fate itself, tended by the nornir. To wash was not just to refresh the skin; it was to symbolically align oneself with the flow of wyrd and the cycles of life.

✨ Purification in Seiðr and Magic⤵️

Accounts of seiðr practice show that ritual cleansing often preceded the rite. The völva (seeress) or practitioner would cleanse before donning ritual garb, raising staves, and calling upon spirits. Purity of the body reinforced clarity of the mind and focus of the will.

🔮 Modern Practice for Today’s Pagans:

¤Use Saturday as a day of ritual cleansing. Wash in water infused with herbs like birch (for renewal), juniper (for purification), or mugwort (for spiritual clarity).

¤Before holding a personal blót or making offerings, cleanse yourself in running water, honoring the traditions of your ancestors.

¤As you bathe, recite a galdr (chant) to the nornir or to the spirits of the well, asking that the waters wash away mists of confusion and prepare you for right action.

¤Keep your sacred tools clean, mirroring the way your ancestors polished weapons and tended their homes in honor of the gods.

✨ Freyja- Lady of Beauty, Battle, and Seiðr ✨

Freyja (“Lady”) is one of the most prominent goddesses in Old Norse mythology, belonging to the Vanir tribe of deities but living among the Æsir after the war between the two. She is associated with love, beauty, desire, wealth, fertility, war, death, and magic.

📜 Lore & Mythology⤵️

Freyja is the daughter of Njörðr, the sea god, and sister of Freyr (Skírnismál, Poetic Edda).

She is renowned for her necklace, Brísingamen, forged by dwarves and a symbol of beauty and power (Sörla þáttr).

As a goddess of the slain, Freyja receives half of those who die in battle into her hall, Fólkvangr, while Odin takes the other half to Valhöll (Grímnismál, stanza 14).

She is deeply tied to seiðr, a form of Norse magic concerning fate, weaving, and trance-journeys. The Ynglinga saga (ch. 4) states that Freyja was the first to teach this art to the Æsir.

⚔️ Attributes⤵️

♡Domains: Love, sexuality, beauty, wealth, death, war, seiðr.

¤Symbols: Brísingamen, falcon-feathered cloak, cats, boar (Hildisvíni).

○Epithets: Vanadís (“Goddess of the Vanir”), Gefn (“the Giver”).

🌿 Modern Pagan Practices Honoring Freyja⤵️

🫴Offerings: Honey, mead, amber, flowers, pork 🫴(symbolic of her boar), or fine adornments. Place them on an altar or offer outdoors under the open sky.

🐦‍⬛Seiðr Practice: Engage in trance-work, chanting, or galdr (sung incantations) to connect with her as Mistress of Seiðr. Historical sources link her directly to these magical practices.

⚔️Battle & Strength: Honor her as a warrior goddess by dedicating physical training, martial arts, or acts of bravery to her. She is not only love but also death and battle.

🐈Cats & Animals: Care for cats or dedicate time to animal protection in her honor, remembering the great chariot drawn by her cats.

💸Wealth & Beauty: Wear amber jewelry, keep a necklace or pendant sacred to her, and dedicate acts of adornment as offerings.

🍺Ritual Toast (Blót): Pour out mead or ale and raise a horn to Freyja, thanking her for beauty, strength, and wisdom. This reflects the ancient practice of blót mentioned in sagas.

🌌 Freyja is a powerful, multifaceted deity; teacher of magic, chooser of the slain, and a Vanir Lady whose presence spans desire, death, and destiny.
