🌞 Sólardag | A Devotional to Sunna🌞
“Sól ek sá, sá var álfröðull…”
“I saw the sun, she was the elf-disc…”
— Völuspá 5, Poetic Edda
Today is Sólardag: Sunday, the sacred day of Sól (Old Norse)/ Sunna (Old High German),.
The divine solar maiden who rides her radiant chariot across the sky.
🐎 The Solar Steeds and the Celestial Race⤵️
● Sól is described in the Prose Edda (Gylfaginning, ch. 11) as driving her chariot across the heavens, pulled by two horses:
Árvakr: "Early Waker"
Alsviðr: "All Swift"
The gods placed bellows under their shoulders to keep them cool as they race through the heavens. Sól's path is perilous, as she is relentlessly pursued by the monstrous wolf Sköll, child of the giantess Angrboða. His twin brother Hati chases the moon, Máni. This eternal pursuit represents the passage of day into night and the ever-present shadow beneath the light.
🔥 "She speeds ever onward, for Sköll is close, jaws wide to swallow her fire."- Paraphrased from Gylfaginning
🌿 Sunna’s Power in Witchcraft and Heathenry⤵️
Sól is healing fire and divine order.
Her light is used in folk magic for⤵️
• Purification: Burn sun herbs (calendula, marigold, sunflower, St. John’s Wort) to clear stagnant energy.
• Empowerment--> Charge tools or charms under the high sun for strength and clarity.
• Seiðr Visions: Practice solar-aligned trance work at noon, calling to Sunna for vision and protection.
🌞 Devotional Acts for Today⤵️
🕯️ Candle Offering: Light a golden, orange, or white candle and speak these words:
“Sunna, shieldmaiden of the sky, bright wheel of Miðgarðr,
May your light guard my steps and burn through shadow.”
🪶 Herbal Gift: Offer sunflower seeds, goldenrod, or chamomile outdoors or on your altar.
🧘🏽♀️ Meditation--> Sit in direct sunlight.
Breathe deeply.
Envision her radiant wheel moving overhead.
Feel her warmth entering your chest and filling your spirit with strength.
🌅 Prophecy and Legacy⤵️
In Vafþrúðnismál (st. 47), Óðinn learns from the wise jötunn Vafþrúðnir that though Sól shall be devoured at Ragnarök, her daughter shall be born anew to ride the sky in the reborn world.
“A daughter is born to the sun,
Before Fenrir devours her;
She shall ride when the gods have perished,
In her mother's path.”
— Vafþrúðnismál, st. 47
Thus, even in her destruction, Sunna is rebirth. She is the promise of dawn beyond the long night.
🌞 Blessing for the Day 🌞
“May Sunna’s chariot blaze clear above you,
May her golden reins guide your path,
And may no wolf steal your light.”
