Stay safe, everyone! As Aging Life Care Professionals, we know how quickly a winter storm can turn from a "cozy snow day" into a high-stress situation for our older neighbors and loved ones.
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has released these helpful reminders for the coming days. While the general advice is great, for our seniors, a little extra attention goes a long way.
If you have an elder in your life or on your block, please take a moment to:
Do a "Pre-Storm" Check: Give them a call today. Ask if they have at least a week’s supply of their medications and if their flashlights have fresh batteries.
Check the Thermostat: Ensure their heat is set to at least 68–70°F. Older adults are more susceptible to hypothermia, even indoors.
Clear a Path: If you’re able, help them salt their walkways or clear a path to the door. Icy patches are the number one cause of dangerous falls this time of year.
Tech Support: Make sure their cell phones and medical alert devices are fully charged before the wind picks up.
A five-minute phone call or a quick knock on the door can make all the difference in keeping our community’s seniors safe and warm. ❄️🏠
