Doing things the right way; even if it’s not the easiest way

I grew up in Southern Maryland, in a much simpler time. One where as kids, our biggest concerns were getting stuck behind the To***co Farmers in Huntingtown on the way to school, or getting home and having enough daylight to play Kickball or ride bikes with friends, before getting called inside to do Homework or eat Dinner. Flash forward to Modern Day, where as a Nation we are tackling Public Health issues such as: Cancer; Obesity; Diabetes; Hypertension; Heart Disease; Respiratory Illnesses & Drug Overdoses, at alarming rates. Things are not so “simple” anymore.

I am a firm believer that Life Experiences shape who we become as people. Whether good or bad, one can always learn and improve. I am from a long line of Civil Servants, and was always taught to help others in their time of need. On Sunday, September 18th, 2005, I received a phone call, which would forever change my life. My sister called me to tell me that my Brother-in-law had suddenly passed away. He had just turned 43 years old (as will I this year). My grief became a catalyst, compelling me to do even more in my community. So, I went and joined the local Rescue Squad, where my husband was already a Member. Our busy lives, quickly became even busier...trying to juggle our Full-time jobs, raising 3 boys, volunteering more than 24 hours a month each, attending Mandatory Drills, Trainings & Meetings, & having rotating schedules so that we both could attend night classes to become Certified EMT’s.

By this time in my adult life, I had attended numerous classes for CPR/AED & First Aid Certification. I was required to hold Basic/Lay Rescuer Certification, as a Nationally Accredited & State Licensed Family Childcare Provider & then a more Advanced/Healthcare Provider Certification to volunteer at the Rescue Squad. My first time performing CPR on a person, was in the back of an ambulance. The victim, was a pediatric patient. I understand that nothing can fully prepare you for these particular set of circumstances. But, what I can tell you is that I instantly recognized just how awful my prior instruction had been. Nobody had told me just how exhausting Compressions are in real life. Nobody had shown me how to assemble needed equipment, such as Masks and Suction Units. Nobody had told me about all the considerations for AED use. Nobody had explained that it’s noisy and messy and chaotic. And, trust me when I tell you the time to find out about these things is not in a Life or Death situation. I felt helpless, useless, frustrated & angry. I vowed to make a difference from that day forth.

I had always questioned how many of these classes were significantly shorter and cheaper than what the local Healthcare facilities or Educational institutions were offering. Of course, a class that’s half the time & half the price is more appealing, right? Plus, I got to hear cool “Horror” Stories about past Medical Calls. What’s not to love? I got to watch our Instructor demonstrate “What to do” on a single manikin in front of the class, without ever explaining when and why it would be appropriate to do CPR. Done! Everything in less than an hour. But, I never got to practice or be tested actually performing compressions, breaths, AED use or Choking Maneuvers on my own manikin. Why? This left me to question if I would be confident enough to help in a true emergency. Instructors would simply just give a feeble reassurance that I was good & that I’d get a card in a couple of days stating I could in fact do all of these things, that I never did. I also never got a Student Manual for reference. And, just in case you were wondering...this is wrong! Instructors are not allowed by their Health & Safety Training Organizations to shortcut curriculum. Such behavior is dishonest, unethical, unprofessional & in some instances even illegal, and sadly has become a cultural norm in some areas. It really needs to stop.
