Winter in Wyoming can be beautiful: snow-covered prairies, stunning sunsets, and crystal-clear skies. That said, it can also be dangerous if you’re not prepared. Whether you’re outside for work, caring for livestock, fixing fences, or enjoying winter recreation, the cold weather demands extra caution. Here are some tips to keep you safe and healthy this winter.
1. Dress in Layers: Layering traps warm air close to your body, allowing you to adjust if you start to overheat. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add insulation like fleece or wool, and finish with a wind- and waterproof outer shell. Wyoming winds are no joke and can cut through clothing to drop your temperature fast, so a good wind-blocking layer is essential. Don’t forget insulated gloves, a hat, and warm socks. Your body loses heat quickly through your head and extremities.
2. Watch for Early Signs of Frostbite and Hypothermia: Frostbite risk goes up dramatically when the windchill drops, even if the air temperature doesn’t seem extreme. Frostbite often starts with tingling, numbness, or pale skin, especially on fingers, toes, ears, and nose. Hypothermia symptoms can include shivering, confusion, slurred speech, and fatigue. If you notice these signs, get to a warm place immediately.
