You're trying to love them, support them, and guide them...
โ without being ๐ต๐ฐ๐ฐ ๐ฎ๐ถ๐ค๐ฉ
โ without making it worse
โ without losing your mind
You wonder:
โข Am I being helpful or overbearing?
โข Do they need therapy... or do ๐ need therapy... or both?
โข How do I give them space while still showing up?
It can feel like walking on eggshells.
And the truth is - this is ๐บ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ณ first time going through this part of their life too. So, be gentle with yourself.
Here are 3 simple ways to support your teen and ease some of that pressure:
1๏ธโฃ Focus on connection over correction
Before offering advice or consequences, lead with curiosity and empathy. Listen more than you speak. Sometimes your teen doesn't need a solution, they just need to feel seen and heard.
2๏ธโฃ Model emotional regulation
You don't have to be perfectly calm all the time, but showing them how to process hard feelings without shutting down or lashing out gives them a blueprint for handling their own emotions.
3๏ธโฃ Create space for therapy (if and when they're ready)
Whether it's for your teen, for you, or for both of you, therapy can be a powerful support. It's not about something being "๐ธ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐จ". It's about having a safe space to navigate the complexity of this stage, together or separately.
